This study aims to improve students’ understanding of the concept of place value of whole numbers through the use of number board media in primary school mathematics learning. The background of this study stems from the fact that many students struggle to distinguish between digits and their place values due to the dominance of conventional, less contextual teaching approaches. This research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in two cycles involving second-grade elementary school students. The findings revealed a significant increase in conceptual understanding after the use of number board media. Students became more active, were able to correctly position digits, and comprehended the meaning of place value more concretely. The implication of this research shows that concrete media such as number boards are effective in strengthening students’ understanding of abstract mathematical concepts in a fun and meaningful way.

Illegal logging is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation, triggering natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and droughts. Children of Generation Alpha, who are still in the cognitive development stage, are considered vulnerable due to their limited understanding and preparedness for such disasters. This community service program aimed to enhance elementary school students’ awareness and knowledge of disaster mitigation through educational media in the form of printed comics. The activity was conducted by the KKN Team of Universitas Ivet Semarang at SDN Plalangan 02, involving 24 students from grades 3 and 4. The procedure consisted of preliminary observation to assess school needs, comic development on the theme of illegal logging-related disaster mitigation, delivery of the material through comic reading sessions, interactive discussions, and evaluation through pretest and posttest. The pretest results showed that most students were in the "moderate" knowledge category (45.8%). After the intervention, 75% of students reached the "good" category. The Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in students’ knowledge before and after the intervention. Printed comics proved effective in conveying complex disaster mitigation content in a visually engaging and narrative-driven format. The approach aligns with the characteristics of Generation Alpha, who are highly responsive to visual media. It is recommended that printed comics be further developed and integrated into disaster education programs in elementary schools, especially those located in disaster prone areas.

This study examines the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving elementary school students’ learning outcomes by reviewing 15 national journal articles published between 2018 and 2024. The results show that PBL significantly enhances students’ abilities in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, with improvements ranging from 7.1% to 83.3%. PBL encourages students to think critically, participate more actively in learning, and develop problem-solving skills through real and relevant situations. However, its implementation still faces several challenges, such as limited teacher training, inadequate facilities, and difficulties in shifting from conventional methods to this new approach. Based on the analysis, three main factors determine the success of PBL: appropriate learning design, the teacher’s ability to guide the PBL process, and the availability of supporting learning resources. The most significant positive impacts are seen among fifth-grade students and in schools located in the Java region. In conclusion, PBL is highly effective when supported by proper teacher training and adaptation to field conditions. Therefore, further teacher development programs and additional research on the long-term effects of implementing this model are strongly recommended.
