This study aims to analyze the persuasive communication carried out by Bank Sampah Mutiara Timor in educating waste management among the people of Kupang City and to identify the obstacles faced in the communication process. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method and is based on a constructivist paradigm. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The informants consist of the managers of Bank Sampah Mutiara Timor and community members who participate as waste bank customers. Data analysis is conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The theoretical framework applied in this study is Joseph A. DeVito’s persuasive communication theory. The results show that the persuasive communication of Bank Sampah Mutiara Timor is implemented through several strategies, including direct socialization, waste management education, storytelling approaches, and hands-on practices in waste sorting and management. The communication process is carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. This persuasive communication has been able to increase public awareness and understanding of the importance of proper waste management, although community participation has not yet been fully optimal. The obstacles encountered include cognitive or perceptual barriers, technical limitations, and a lack of public awareness and consistency in sorting waste. This study concludes that persuasive communication plays an important role in community-based waste management education. Therefore, Bank Sampah Mutiara Timor is encouraged to continuously develop innovative and sustainable communication strategies to further enhance community participation in waste management efforts in Kupang City.

Waste management is an urgent environmental issue that requires active community participation. This study aims to analyze the speaking skills of members of the Sapu Lidi Community in Pekalongan during waste management discussions, a community that actively processes organic waste into valuable products such as eco-enzyme. Using a qualitative approach and an ethnographic case study design, this research explores speaking skills within its natural social context. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participatory observation of community discussions, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings show that the community members' speaking skills are characterized by fluent delivery, appropriate and credible word choice, and a persuasive, egalitarian, and humorous speaking style. Community members utilize rhetorical strategies such as humor, calls to action, and concrete evidence such as harvest results to build participation and environmental awareness among residents. The application of dialogic communication and the integration of verbal delivery with hands-on practice demonstrations proved effective in achieving the community's goals. Academically, this research contributes to environmental communication studies within grassroots communities. Practically, the findings can serve as a foundation for developing speaking skills training for volunteers in similar communities in other areas.

Waste management in Indonesia continues to face serious challenges, with waste generation reaching around 68 million tonnes per year, while the traditional landfill-based approach has become increasingly ineffective and unsustainable. This study aims to: (1) analyse the policy strategies of local government in implementing Integrated Waste Treatment Facilities (IWTFs) in Sidoarjo Regency; (2) identify the key success factors of the IWTF programme; (3) evaluate its impact on waste reduction and community participation; and (4) propose an effective governance model that can serve as best practice for other regions. Using a qualitative single case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with local government officials, IWTF managers, and community leaders, as well as field observations at five IWTF sites and a review of relevant policy documents. Thematic analysis was applied within the framework of policy implementation and collaborative governance theories. The results show that IWTF success in Sidoarjo was driven by four main factors: strong political commitment supported by adequate budget allocation, a collaborative partnership between government, community, and private sector, community empowerment through economic incentives via waste banks, and a structured monitoring–evaluation system. The IWTF programme has reduced landfill waste by 35%, increased public waste-sorting participation from 20% to 68%, and generated IDR 2.4 billion annually from recycling activities. Overall, Sidoarjo’s IWTF initiative demonstrates that sustainable waste management can be achieved through decentralized, participatory, and collaborative governance backed by consistent policy and institutional capacity.

Population growth and lifestyle changes in Indonesia have led to complex waste management issues, negatively impacting social, health, and environmental sustainability aspects. To address this, a sustainable management approach that actively involves community participation is necessary. The concept of a Waste Bank, based on the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), emerges as a strategic, community-based solution. This community service program aims to encourage active community participation in the Waste Bank program in Tanjung Uban Selatan, Bintan Regency, while supporting the realization of a Smart City based on intelligent and participatory environments. The methodology used is a qualitative approach to gain in-depth understanding. Primary data collection was carried out through interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies. Key informants were purposively selected from various stakeholders, including Waste Bank administrators, local government representatives, and community members. The results show that, although initially challenging to increase community participation, the program has had a significant positive impact. It successfully shifted the community's view of waste as a valuable economic resource. Quantitatively, this is reflected in stable income from the sale of high-quality inorganic waste, such as metals and electronic waste. The program also led to strategic innovations, including sustainable education, waste savings incentives, social media use, and the "Dasi Umat" empowerment program. The success of this program, strengthened by awards at the district and national levels, makes it a model for sustainable waste management focused on community empowerment and supporting smart city development.

The problem of organic waste remains a serious issue in Indonesia, including in rural areas. Jatitamban Village, Bondowoso Regency, faces similar challenges due to household waste and residual by-products from local small enterprises producing tape and cassava chips, which are not yet optimally managed. The Community Service Program (KKN) of the University of Jember implemented an initiative to empower village youth through maggot cultivation as an environmentally friendly and economically valuable solution for organic waste management. This study employed a Community-Based Research (CBR) approach by engaging local youth as active partners in every stage of the program, including observation, planning, socialization, technical training, workshops, and monitoring. The results indicate that Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation serves as an effective strategy to reduce the volume of organic waste while producing value-added products such as alternative animal feed and organic fertilizer. The involvement of youth not only enhanced their knowledge and skills but also fostered environmental awareness and created new entrepreneurial opportunities. Furthermore, the program successfully established a solid and independent youth group capable of sustainably managing organic waste through maggot cultivation practices. The implications of this program extend beyond environmental improvement to promoting village economic independence through the utilization of organic waste. Therefore, youth empowerment through maggot cultivation can serve as a strategic model for sustainable waste management as well as strengthening community capacity in rural areas.

Waste remains one of the major environmental issues and a serious challenge in rural communities. The lack of discipline in waste disposal and limited knowledge of the impact of non-biodegradable waste have contributed to declining environmental quality and potential health problems. In Buniwangi Village, Pagelaran Subdistrict, Cianjur Regency, these conditions highlight the need for educational programs that provide practical understanding while fostering community awareness. This community service activity aimed to improve residents’ awareness of waste management through visual education media in the form of information boards displaying the decomposition time of various types of waste, ranging from organic to non-organic materials. The implementation method applied an asset-based community development (ABCD) approach, emphasizing active community participation. The program was carried out in three main stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation stage included location surveys, needs mapping, and obtaining permission from village authorities. The implementation stage involved designing attractive educational boards, installing them at strategic points in the village, and conducting socialization to explain the information provided. The evaluation stage was carried out through direct observation and short interviews to assess the program’s impact on community knowledge and behavior. The results indicated an improvement in residents’ understanding of the differences between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Villagers began to show awareness of reducing single-use plastics and started applying the 3R principles (reduce, reuse, recycle) in daily life. Overall, this program had a positive impact by fostering greater environmental concern and became an initial step toward building a sustainable waste management culture in Buniwangi Village.

The lack of waste management in the community of Kampung Benar Dusun VI Village, Kota Pari, Pantai Cermin District, Serdang Bedagai Regency is due to the limited knowledge and understanding of waste management in general. People still think that waste management is not important because people think that their waste will decompose by itself without thinking that this will have a huge impact if the waste continues to be left unmanaged. One way to support this waste management program is through a waste bank. A waste bank is a place that is used to make it easier for the public to sort waste, then the sorted waste will be deposited at a factory that makes crafts from waste or at a waste collection point. The aim of this research is to determine community knowledge regarding waste management, analyze existing waste management in the community and find out what strategies are effective for waste management. The method used by researchers is an integrated counseling method and systematic training. Data was collected by observing in the field and conducting in-depth interviews with informants. The results of the research show that after providing outreach to the community that waste management is important, the community also understands better about good waste management and knows effective waste management strategies to implement using the 3R system.
