Community empowerment in the formation and management of waste banks and used cooking oil waste in RW 03, Medokan Semampir Village, Sukolilo District, Surabaya City, aims to increase community awareness and participation in protecting the environment. This program was initiated as a response to the problem of solid and liquid waste which is often ignored, even though it has the potential to be managed into a resource with economic value. Through the waste bank, residents are involved in the process of managing household waste, sorting organic and inorganic waste, and utilizing it into valuable or recyclable items. Meanwhile, for used cooking oil waste, collection and education are carried out regarding the negative impacts of careless disposal of oil on the environment, as well as its use as raw material for biodiesel or other environmentally friendly products. The community empowerment approach is carried out through outreach, training and mentoring by the driving team. This program not only aims to improve the environment, but also opens up economic opportunities for local communities through a savings system from the sale of collected waste and used cooking oil. The results of this activity show an increase in environmental awareness among the community, as well as real economic benefits felt by the residents of RW 03.

Aromatherapy is beneficial for maintaining and enhancing physical, physiological, and spiritual well-being by consuming flowers, roots, fruits, resins, bark, and other aromatic compounds from plants. In Indonesia, around 90% of the used cooking oil produced is not managed properly, leading to environmental issues and contaminating soil and water, as well as public health. To reduce its negative impact on the environment and public health, it can be processed into valuable products such as aromatherapy candles. The purpose of this study is to study the impact of using used cooking oils and its benefits for the community of Sinarsari Village so that they can utilize this waste more sustainably and efficiently. The Tim PPK Ormawa HImasiter IPB (Student Association of Nutrition and Animal Feed) plays a significant role in promoting new innovations that benefit the community, one of which is the creation of aromatic candles with the aim of learning how to recycle used oil into useful products. The results of this comprehensive evaluation will assist the implementing team in identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of this program.

The increase in population has an impact on increasing waste, including cooking oil waste known as used cooking oil. This used cooking oil is not always thrown away, but can also be reused. However, improper disposal of waste cooking oil can cause environmental problems. Used cooking oil is a type of waste that can pollute the environment by increasing COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) levels in the water. Apart from that, this oil can also cause an unpleasant odor due to the biological degradation process. Currently, used cooking oil is often thrown directly into the drain. This research was conducted in Wonorejo Village, Surabaya, with data collection methods in the form of questionnaires, field observations and interviews as primary data, as well as a general description of the area and related literature as secondary data. The results of the analysis show that there are variations in views and practices in managing used cooking oil among respondents. The level of public awareness about the importance of managing used cooking oil to support the zero waste concept varies. The majority of respondents (64%) stated that the main responsibility for managing used cooking oil lies with the users themselves.

The people of Pecekelan Village, Sepuran District, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, face a unique challenge in the form of an unpleasant odor from cattle pens adjacent to settlements, reflecting a strong agrarian life but interfering with daily comfort. In response to this situation, the Community Service Lecture (KPM) team from the University of Al-Quran Science developed an innovation in making aromatherapy candles made from used cooking oil as a natural solution to eliminate the smell of cages. This initiative not only aims to overcome the odor problem, but also to utilize household waste into useful products, create economical and environmentally friendly solutions, and improve the quality of life of village communities. This program is carried out through a series of activities including socialization, aromatherapy candle making training, product trials, and basic entrepreneurship training. Early results show effectiveness in reducing cage odors, improving home comfort, and creating a healthier environment. Furthermore, this program increases public awareness about waste management, encourages active participation in maintaining environmental cleanliness, and opens up new economic opportunities. Used cooking oil cannot be reused due to its changed physical and chemical structure, or commonly referred to as “minyak jelantah”. Repeated use of minyak jelantah can pose a risk of various diseases. Meanwhile, “minyak jelantah” is included in waste that is difficult to decompose if it is just thrown away. The utilization of used cooking oil into candles is a solution to this problem. Based on research using observation methods in Sarimukti Village residents, and experimental research methods and documentation, minyak jelantah waste can be reduced by being utilized into aromatherapy candles. Based on the organoleptic test, the results show that the color is not suitable, while the shape and smell are suitable based on the concentration of stearic acid and telon oil added. Based on the burn time, the more telon oil added, the faster the candle runs out.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or known as DBD disease which is caused by a dengue virus caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The disease causes sufferers to experience severe pain, complications, and death. The UIN Walisongo KKN Team conducted community service activities in Krompaan Village with the aim of increasing public awareness and participation in preventing Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DBD). Considering that this village is located near a river, which has the potential to be a habitat for the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, effective prevention efforts are needed to prevent this disease, which is one of the infectious diseases that is still endemic in Indonesia. The spread of this disease is influenced by mobility and environmental conditions that support the breeding of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The community service team focused on three main objectives in this activity by providing education about the dangers of DBD, teaching how to prevent the spread of mosquitoes, and using aromatherapy candles to prevent mosquitoes. The purpose of the counseling is to reduce diseases caused by mosquitoes by teaching the community about how to live a healthy life.Used cooking oil processed into aromatherapy candles is one of the new innovations in preventing DBD. This method is considered practical and easy to implement by the community by utilizing materials available around them. The community is also educated on how to maintain environmental cleanliness, such as draining and closing water reservoirs regularly and recycling household waste to reduce the possibility of mosquito breeding grounds. The hope is that this outreach will make the community more independent in maintaining environmental health and actively involved in preventing dengue fever so that the risk of increasing cases in their village can be reduced. This activity has succeeded in achieving the stated objectives, namely increasing community awareness and involvement in preventing dengue fever.
