Explanation text is a text that can train critical reading skills, especially for junior high school students. It contains compound sentences that summarize information from several sentences into one sentence. Writing compound sentences that are not quite right will also affect the meaning or meaning that will be conveyed in the explanation text. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of compound sentences in the explanation text which will later be used as teaching materials for junior high school students. The quality of good compound sentences will later affect students' critical reading skills. The methodology used is a qualitative approach where data collection is carried out first. This technique is carried out using the Listen and Note technique. The Listen technique is done by reading and observing the explanation text on the brainacademy website. The note technique is carried out after reading the entire text recording the existing compound sentences and then re-identifying the results that have been obtained. After analyzing the explanation text, compound sentences of equal value and compound sentences of levels were found in the explanation text. The difference between the two sentences can be seen in the sentence structure and the use of conjunctions. The quality of compound sentences is also analyzed in terms of clarity of meaning, use of appropriate conjunctions, and level of complexity. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for teaching materials and provide insight into the influence of compound sentences that affect the quality of students' critical reading.

In the era of globalization, the widespread use of digital gadgets has significantly influenced students’ daily lives, including their learning processes. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of gadget addiction among students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTS) and to examine its potential impact on their ability to recite the Qur’an. A quantitative approach with a correlational research design was employed to identify the association between gadget addiction and Qur’an reading proficiency. The participants consisted of 122 students selected through convenience sampling from one MTS institution in Cirebon Regency. The instrument for measuring gadget addiction contained 11 items, while the Qur’an reading ability test consisted of 12 items, with a reliability coefficient of 0.593. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to describe the distribution of scores and inferential statistics, specifically the correlation test, to determine the relationship between the two variables. The results revealed that 77% of students experienced a high level of gadget addiction, while 15% demonstrated low levels, and 8% fell into the moderate category. In terms of Qur’an recitation ability, 63% of the students were classified in the low category, 35% in the moderate category, and only 2% in the high category. The correlation analysis produced a coefficient of -0.544**, indicating a moderately strong negative relationship between gadget addiction and Qur’an reading ability (range 0.400–0.599). The two-tailed significance value (p = 0.000 < 0.05) confirmed the statistical significance of this finding. Overall, the study highlights that greater gadget addiction is associated with lower Qur’an reading proficiency, whereas lower levels of gadget use are linked to improved recitation skills. These findings suggest the urgent need for educational interventions and parental guidance to balance gadget usage and ensure the strengthening of Qur’anic literacy among students.

Basic literacy issues remain a global challenge, as evidenced by the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which place Indonesia at a low rank in reading proficiency. This condition highlights the urgency of literacy as a fundamental competency for elementary school students, particularly in Indonesia. A similar phenomenon is observed in the city of Semarang, where students demonstrate low reading interest, limited access to reading materials, and reliance on conventional teaching methods. In this context, the presence of the SOUL Literacy Community holds strategic potential to support the enhancement of students’ reading and writing skills. This community service initiative aims to empower the SOUL Literacy Community by strengthening the capacities of teachers, students, and the community in developing literacy programs. The methods employed include Participatory Action Research (PAR) and Participatory Community Appraisal (PCA), implemented through preparation, training, mentoring, and evaluation stages. The program results indicate increased community capacity in formulating literacy agendas, improved student interest and skills in reading and writing, and enhanced teacher confidence in applying interactive literacy strategies. Furthermore, the program successfully established a participatory literacy model that strengthens school–community collaboration and can be replicated in other regions. In conclusion, this initiative contributes to the development of a sustainable literacy ecosystem and supports the achievement of SDG 4 on quality education.

The lack of knowledge among students in reading cursive letters and copying simple sentences into cursive letters has led to low writing skills in second-grade students at SD Negeri 11 Bahagia. This indicates the importance of implementing an approach that can enhance their writing skills. One alternative that can be implemented is the use of card media. Card media is considered effective because it provides visual stimulation that helps students recognize and correctly write cursive letters. This study aims to improve students' ability to write cursive letters through the use of card media in Indonesian language lessons. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which allows for direct evaluation in each learning cycle. The subjects of this study are second-grade students at SD Negeri 11 Bahagia Panti. Before the action was implemented, the average score of students in the pre-action activities was 60, indicating the need for improvement. In the first cycle, the average score increased to 75, with a completion percentage of 55%. Although there was an improvement, it did not yet reach the expected target. After continuing to the second cycle, the students' average score further increased to 81.2, with a completion percentage reaching 84%. This shows that the use of card media successfully improved students' writing skills and that the target set had been achieved. Therefore, this study concludes that the use of card media can significantly improve students' learning outcomes in writing cursive letters.

Community service (PKM) is one of the pillars of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, aimed at improving the quality of life of society through the transfer of knowledge and technology. This study focuses on the strategic role of PKM in addressing the low literacy levels in Indonesia, an issue that directly impacts social-economic welfare. Based on literature studies, this article analyzes the relationship between PKM, literacy, and welfare, as well as identifying effective implementation methods. The analysis results show that PKM is not only limited to formal education but must also be solution-oriented, participatory, and sustainable. Relevant PKM programs, such as the establishment of reading gardens, digital training for MSMEs, and financial education, have proven effective in enhancing community literacy. Improving literacy, including digital and financial literacy, is an essential tool for empowering communities to access information, develop skills, and make informed decisions. Digital literacy, for instance, opens access to vast information, while financial literacy helps communities manage their finances wisely, ultimately increasing their economic competitiveness. Through a participatory approach, PKM can also encourage communities to be more actively involved in decision-making processes related to their welfare. Through PKM programs, academics can bridge the knowledge and skills gap in society, contributing to the reduction of poverty and inequality. Thus, literacy not only functions to enhance individual capacity but also serves as a bridge to better welfare, covering economic, social, and health aspects. Solution-oriented and sustainable PKM programs can be the key to creating a more prosperous and independent society.

This study investigated the implementation and effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in enhancing the English reading skills of tenth-grade students at an Indonesian senior high school. The research was motivated by the persistent gap left by traditional language teaching methods, which frequently emphasize grammatical accuracy and vocabulary memorization while often neglecting the development of practical reading abilities. To address this issue, the study systematically examined the application of TBLT through three structured phases: pre-reading, main reading, and post-reading tasks. Each phase was designed to promote active learning, critical thinking, and student engagement in the reading process. The methodology involved classroom observations, task-based instructional activities, and an analysis of student exam scores as the primary indicators of progress. During the pre-reading phase, students were encouraged to activate prior knowledge and predict content, which helped build contextual understanding. In the main reading phase, tasks focused on developing essential reading strategies such as skimming for general ideas and scanning for specific information.

The low level of reading literacy in remote areas, such as the Muna Barat Daya Regency, poses a significant challenge in basic education. One innovation proposed to address this issue is the implementation of Scramble Fun Learning, an educational game-based approach designed to enhance reading literacy skills in students at SD Negeri 1Weet. This community service activity was carried out in two stages: a theoretical stage, which provided foundational understanding about the importance of literacy and gamification approaches, and a practical stage involving both teachers and fifth-grade students in word arrangement activities. Scramble Fun Learning combines game elements with a gamification approach by having students arrange words from random letters. The main objective is to train vocabulary recognition, strengthen reading comprehension, and increase student motivation to learn. In this activity, students are challenged to form words or sentences within a limited time, which not only stimulates their creativity but also makes the learning process more enjoyable and engaging. This method enables students to learn while playing, which is particularly effective in overcoming the boredom that often occurs in conventional learning. The results of this activity showed a significant improvement in student enthusiasm, active participation, and literacy skills. Many students who were previously disinterested in reading activities became more enthusiastic and motivated. Despite limitations in resources and time, the activity was still effectively implemented, thanks to creative adjustments made by the implementing team to ensure the material and activities were well received by both students and teachers. Overall, these findings indicate that Scramble Fun Learning is a highly potential and applicable approach to improving students' reading literacy, especially in areas with limited educational resources. This approach not only enhances literacy skills but also builds students' interest and motivation to continue learning.

Gunungsari Village, Windusari District, is one of the areas facing quite serious challenges in efforts to develop basic literacy in school-age children. The main problems faced are low interest in reading, limited access to adequate reading materials, and learning methods that are still conventional. These conditions have implications for many children who are not able to read and write fluently despite having received an elementary school education. In response to this situation, the community service team took the initiative to implement a literacy program that uses an interactive learning approach through the development of a literacy park. This program is not only designed to be a learning platform, but also to create a learning atmosphere that is fun, contextual, and involves the active participation of children. Various activities are implemented, including storytelling, the provision of a reading corner, educational games such as math games, vocabulary quizzes, and the provision of simple rewards to maintain high learning motivation. This program activities are carried out periodically with the involvement of the school, the surrounding community, and also the village government, so that its sustainability has the support of various parties. The results of the implementation show a significant increase in children's literacy skills. Not only are they reading more fluently, but they are also better able to comprehend story content and write simple ideas. Furthermore, the children appear more confident in expressing themselves, are more active in every learning activity, and are beginning to demonstrate positive reading habits. A culture of literacy is also slowly growing through the existence of child-friendly and inclusive literacy parks. This proves that a fun, community-based literacy approach is highly relevant in rural areas with limited resources and can be a simple yet impactful means of educational transformation for children's futures.

The low reading interest and literacy skills of elementary school children in Indonesia remain a problem that requires creative and sustainable solutions. Factors such as limited access to quality books, a lack of reading habits at home, and uninteresting learning approaches are often the causes of a weak literacy culture among students. To address this problem, the Student Community Service Program (KKN) of Sebelas Maret University students in Singodutan Village implemented an activity aimed at fostering a culture of literacy in children through a Reading Book Content-Based Project at SDN 3 Krisak. The concept of this activity integrates reading activities with the creation of creative projects that are appropriate to the content of the reading, so that students not only understand the text but are also able to process the information into real products. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research type to understand students' experiences during the activity. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature review, which were then analyzed descriptively. Activities included selecting reading books appropriate to students' ability levels, shared reading, discussions about the reading content, and the creation of creative projects such as posters, picture stories, or artwork inspired by the reading material. The results of the activity showed an increase in student participation in reading activities, an increase in interest in books, and an improvement in their ability to process information into creative works. Furthermore, students demonstrated greater self-confidence when presenting their work to their classmates.

This community service activity was carried out with the primary objective of improving the Qur'an reading skills of the women of the Majelis Taklim (Islamic study group) through systematically designed intensive training. Reading the Qur'an properly and correctly is an obligation for every Muslim, but in reality, many people, especially the women of the Majelis Taklim (Islamic study group), still face obstacles in aspects of makhraj, tajwid, and fluency. This condition encourages the need for a targeted coaching program to improve the quality of Qur'an reading, so that the values of Islamic teachings can be understood and practiced more accurately. The training was held in early July 2025 with a total of 35 participants from the Majelis Taklim (Islamic study group) with diverse reading ability backgrounds. The methods used included lectures, demonstrations, reading practice, individual guidance, and ongoing evaluation at each meeting. This approach was chosen so that participants not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that can be immediately applied. Evaluation was carried out through observing reading ability, courage to ask questions, and active participation in group exercises. The results of the activity showed a significant improvement in the participants' Qur'an reading skills, both in terms of letter pronunciation, application of Tajweed rules, and fluency in reading holy verses. The participants' enthusiasm was evident in their eagerness to participate in all sessions, their sincerity in practicing, and their active interaction during the learning process. Furthermore, this activity also fostered new motivation for participants to continue improving their reading quality independently and create a conducive learning environment in the Islamic study groups. Thus, this training proves that the right learning strategy, supported by high motivation from participants, can have a positive and sustainable impact on improving the quality of Quran reading. It is hoped that this type of program can be replicated in other Islamic study groups so that its benefits are even broader for the community.

Literacy is one of the key factors that hinders the development of human resources. To improve the quality of human resources, it is essential to focus on eliminating illiteracy within the population. One of the primary goals of this outreach activity is to enhance the literacy skills of the local community in Sitanggal Village, located in Larangan District, Brebes Regency, Central Java. The residents of Sitanggal Village primarily rely on farming and entrepreneurship for their income. However, due to the village's isolated location, difficult access, and low economic status, many residents face challenges in accessing proper education. As a result, the illiteracy rate in this area is relatively high, further exacerbating the cycle of poverty. To address this issue, a collaboration has been established with the Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM) Danawangsa Sitanggal, which has facilitated the eradication of illiteracy within the community. The literacy skills of the participants were assessed both before and after the program implementation using pre-tests and post-tests. The participants, aged between 35 and 59 years, totaled 50 individuals. The program was conducted in three stages: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Each stage was structured around specially designed teaching modules, employing engaging and interactive methods to ensure the participants' active involvement. The results of the program were highly encouraging. The participants' reading skills improved significantly, rising from 10% to 64%. Their writing skills saw a notable increase from 40% to 82%, and their counting skills improved drastically from 80% to 100%. These improvements highlight the success of the program and demonstrate the positive impact that literacy education can have on enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals in marginalized communities.
