This study explores the themes of poverty and educational values in the novel Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah by Naguib Mahfouz using the sociology of literature approach developed by Alan Swingewood. The novel is selected because it portrays the social reality of Egyptian society in the 1940s, particularly the lower class facing economic hardship, social inequality, and limited social mobility. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method through reading, note-taking, and library research. The data are drawn from narratives, dialogues, and events in the novel that reflect both poverty and educational values. The analysis is conducted by relating the textual content to its social and historical context. The findings indicate that poverty is not merely an economic issue but also a structural condition affecting the psychological, moral, and social aspects of the characters. Furthermore, the novel conveys educational values, including religious, moral, social, and cultural dimensions, which are closely linked to the realities of pre-revolutionary Egyptian society. Overall, Swingewood’s approach highlights the novel as a form of social critique as well as a medium for fostering readers’ social awareness.

Reading ability is a fundamental skill that must be mastered by first-grade elementary school students as a foundation for understanding various subjects. However, in practice, many students still experience difficulties in early reading, such as recognizing letters, combining syllables, and understanding simple words. One alternative method that can be used to address this issue is the storytelling method in learning activities. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of the storytelling method in improving the reading ability of first-grade elementary school students. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method. Data were collected from various sources, including scientific journals, books, and relevant previous studies published within the last five years. The data collection technique was carried out through documentation, while data analysis used content analysis by reviewing, comparing, and synthesizing findings from different sources. The results of the study indicate that the storytelling method is effective in improving students’ early reading skills. This method enhances students’ reading interest, enriches their vocabulary, and helps them recognize letters and words more easily in an enjoyable learning environment. In addition, storytelling creates an interactive classroom atmosphere and increases student engagement in the learning process. In conclusion, the storytelling method is an effective and relevant instructional strategy to improve the reading ability of first-grade elementary school students. Therefore, it is recommended as an innovative approach to support the development of early literacy skills.

This study analyzes the integration of turoth (classical Islamic scholarship) and digital media in moderate Islamic education through Gus Kautsar’s YouTube lectures. Amid concerns that religious digitalization may simplify Islamic teachings and reduce epistemological depth, this research examines whether turoth transmission in digital platforms maintains traditional scholarly structures. Using a qualitative approach with thematic content analysis, this study analyzes three classical text-based lecture videos published between January and March 2024. The findings show that turoth is represented through direct reading of Arabic classical texts, hierarchical argument structures (Qur’an–Hadith–Ulama), references to madhhab authorities, and contextualization of contemporary digital issues. The adaptation identified is pedagogical rather than epistemological, reflected in episodic segmentation, communicative translation, and contextual illustrations suited to Generation Z’s learning patterns. Furthermore, moderate Islamic education in the analyzed content emerges not through normative slogans, but through systematic engagement with classical texts. This study demonstrates that digital media can function as a medium for recontextualizing Islamic tradition while fostering moderate religious values among Generation Z in the digital era.

This study aims to analyze the role of the principal in evaluating the Qur’an reading program using the Batiq Izzati method at RA Al-Izzah in Serang City. The principal holds a strategic responsibility in ensuring the quality of education, including the implementation of religious programs that play a crucial role in shaping Islamic character in early childhood. The Batiq Izzati method is an internally developed approach by the Al-Izzah Foundation, designed to facilitate Qur’an reading through a gradual, enjoyable, and child-friendly method. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the principal has fulfilled eight key leadership roles; however, the evaluation process is not yet optimal due to limited time and insufficient parental involvement. Evaluations are conducted daily by teachers and periodically by the principal to determine students' progress through different levels (jilid). Supporting factors include competent teachers, adequate facilities, and a structured evaluation system, while inhibiting factors involve time constraints and limited human resources. This study recommends strengthening the principal's role in continuous evaluation and fostering better collaboration between the school and parents to enhance the program's effectiveness.

Islamic education management in the contemporary era is no longer adequate if understood solely as an administrative activity, but must be built on a solid philosophical, ethical, and spiritual foundation. This article aims to analyze the concept of Islamic education management from the perspective of Al-Ghazali and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and examine the relevance of its implementation for contemporary Islamic education management. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research type. Data were obtained from the primary works of both figures and various relevant secondary sources, then analyzed through a comparative-conceptual approach with qualitative content analysis techniques and hermeneutic reading. The results show that Al-Ghazali emphasizes the ethical-spiritual dimension of education through the integration of knowledge, charity, morals, and purification of the soul, while al-Attas emphasizes the epistemological-philosophical dimension through the concepts of ta'dib, adab, and the Islamic worldview. Both have a common ground in the view that Islamic education must be directed at the formation of knowledgeable, civilized, and moral human beings, and should not be reduced to a technical process with neutral value. In terms of implementation, this study synthesizes the thoughts of both figures relevant to strengthening education, leadership, curriculum and learning management, institutional culture formation, and holistic educational evaluation. Therefore, Islamic educational management is ideally built on a foundation of ethical-spiritual and epistemological-philosophical integration to ensure effective, valuable, and transcendental-oriented educational governance.

This study aims to examine the role of literary catechesis in helping believers, especially young people, to understand and live out the Word of God in their daily lives. The background of this research is rooted in the rapid development of technology and the flow of information, which significantly influence how young people perceive and experience their faith. In this context, catechesis is often still conducted in a one-way manner and tends to lack connection with participants’ lived experiences. Therefore, a more contextual and participatory approach is needed. This research employs a literature study method by analyzing various sources, including academic journals and Church documents, particularly the Petunjuk untuk Katekese (2020). The findings show that literary catechesis is an effective approach because it places Sacred Scripture at the center of faith formation through processes of reading, understanding, and reflecting on the text. This approach enables participants not only to know the content of Scripture but also to relate it to their personal life experiences.

This article examines pneumatological methods and spiritual practices across three Pentecostal seasons: Classical Pentecostalism, Charismatic, and Neo-Charismatic. It highlights the importance of these three movements within the framework of the development of the Pentecostal-Charismatic Church in Indonesia. This research begins with the observation that scholars continue to use the terms Pentecostal, Charismatic, and Neo-Charismatic overlappingly, despite their unique theological and practical emphases. This article presents a critical-comparative literature review on baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and spiritual gifts, forms of spirituality, interdenominational relations, theological risks, and ecclesiological implications. The research finds that Classical Pentecostalism emphasizes baptism in the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues as the primary evidence, Charismatics extend Spirit-led activities toward cross-denominational renewal, while Neo-Charismatics place additional emphasis on power, miracles, healing, spiritual warfare, and success in life. The contribution proposed in this article is a theological typology that can be used for critical reading of Pentecostal-Charismatic practices in Indonesia while still appreciating the richness of the experience of the Spirit. This typology can help churches consider experience, Scripture, Christian character, and ecclesiastical institutional accountability in a more balanced way.

Metaphor is a form of figurative language that expresses meaning indirectly by comparing one concept with another concept that has similar characteristics. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of metaphors used and to analyze how metaphors are represented in the lyrics of selected songs by Nadin Amizah, namely Bertaut, Taruh, Sorai, Semua Aku Dirayakan, and Hormat Kepada Angin. This research uses Ullmann’s theory (1972) which classifies metaphors into four types: anthropomorphic metaphor, animal metaphor, concrete-to-abstract metaphor, and synesthetic metaphor. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by reading the song lyrics, identifying metaphorical expressions, and classifying them based on Ullmann’s theory. The results show that there are 20 metaphorical expressions found in the selected songs. Anthropomorphic metaphor appears most frequently with 9 occurrences (45%), followed by concrete-to-abstract metaphor with 8 occurrences (40%). Animal metaphor appears 2 times (10%), while synesthetic metaphor appears only once (5%). Texts depicting violence in the Old Testament, particularly Joshua 6:1–27, are often cited as evidence that the Bible legitimizes divine violence and genocide. This study aims to analyze the narrative of the conquest of Jericho through a historical-critical approach by integrating narrative structure analysis, historical-religious context, and a conceptual study of herem. The method used is a literature review with a qualitative approach that situates the text within the context of the Ancient Near East. The results of the study indicate that Joshua 6 is a systematically constructed theological narrative intended to affirm YHWH’s sovereignty as the Warrior-God and His faithfulness to the covenant with Israel. The concept of herem does not merely signify annihilation but functions as a mechanism for the sanctification of the people and the affirmation of covenantal identity in the face of the threat of syncretism. Furthermore, the use of war language in this text reflects the hyperbolic rhetoric characteristic of ancient literature, and thus cannot be read literally as a legitimization of modern violence. Consequently, a historical-critical reading affirms that this narrative is not a justification for genocide, but rather a theological construction that serves to shape the identity of faith and the understanding of God’s holiness and sovereignty in the history of Israel.
