Marriage is a universal social institution, yet its implementation is profoundly shaped by distinctive local cultural values. One such cultural manifestation is the Merari’ tradition practiced by the indigenous Sasak community in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This tradition refers to the practice of "elopement," which forms an integral part of customary rituals uniting two individuals in marital bonds. This study aims to explore in depth the fundamental reasons why the Sasak people continue to uphold the Merari’ tradition amidst the tides of modernization and the bureaucratization of national marriage law. It also seeks to describe the procedural and normative structure of the Merari’ marriage process from the perspective of customary law. Furthermore, this research investigates the types of customary sanctions imposed when individuals violate the traditional norms of marriage. This study uses a socio-legal approach, which not only examines written legal norms (positive law) but also considers how these norms are applied and function within society, particularly through the practice of Merari’ in the Sasak community. The findings show that the Merari’ tradition is not merely a romanticized relic of the past, but a form of cultural resistance against the dominance of formal law, which is often perceived as inadequate in accommodating local values. The Merari’ process follows a clearly defined sequence—starting from mutual agreement between the couple, the act of elopement, reporting to customary leaders, and culminating in the nyelabar ceremony, which serves as the social ratification of the marriage. In cases of violation or deviation from these customary norms, community elders may impose sanctions such as traditional fines (material penalties), social exclusion, or prohibition from participating in customary events. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the Merari’ tradition holds legal legitimacy within the framework of customary law, as it is carried out on the basis of social consensus, noble values, and binding communal norms. Its persistence illustrates a dynamic relationship between state law and customary law, wherein both systems can coexist in parallel, provided there is mutual recognition and space for dialogue. Thus, there is an urgent need for an integrative legal approach in the formulation of national legal policies—an approach that is not only normative, but also contextual and responsive to the legal pluralism present in Indonesian society.

The entry of foreign cultures into Indonesia is one of the impacts of the increasingly widespread globalization. These new cultures underwent a process of acculturation and, over time, began to dominate local cultures. If the original culture is not well preserved, there is a risk that it will be eroded and replaced by new influences that are present. In an effort to preserve Indonesia's cultural richness, the younger generation has a very important role in filtering and choosing what is useful and what is not. However, the presence of foreign cultures often makes people, especially the millennial generation, prioritize personal freedom over moral values. This results in many of them forgetting norms and traditions in order to satisfy individual desires. This research aims to research and explain the actions and responses of the younger generation to foreign cultures, as well as the impact caused by globalization due to the entry of new cultures, both positive and negative. The results of the discussion show that the influence of foreign culture has made many millennial generations begin to forget the original Indonesian culture and ignore the norms in society. Even so, there are still some generations who are trying hard to maintain these cultural values in their daily lives. This research is expected to provide benefits to the community and the millennial young generation, so that they are more aware of the importance of preserving and preserving Indonesia's indigenous culture.

This study examines how the actors’ linguistic backgrounds influence the pronunciation of Javanese dialect in Bayu Skak’s film Yowis Ben. Using a phonetic-phonological approach and performative analysis, this study explores how non-native Javanese actors pronounce typical Javanese dialect sounds in the context of film acting. Data were obtained through transcriptions of conversations in the film and observations of the actors’ performances, then analyzed to reveal the forms of phonological variation that emerged. The findings indicate that individual linguistic factors of the actors play an important role in determining the authenticity of dialect pronunciation. Non-Javanese actors tend to show symptoms of phonological interference, such as phoneme changes and intonation that do not conform to Javanese dialect patterns. However, intensive dialect training can help some actors approach more authentic pronunciation. The uniqueness of this study lies in its approach that combines phonological studies with performance analysis in films, and its focus on the use of dialect in cinematic contexts, not just everyday or formal communication. This study makes a significant contribution to the development of applied phonology and offers insights for the film industry that promotes local cultural values

The social identity of the Osing indigenous youth in Banyuwangi faces major challenges due to the influence of globalization that often affects local culture. This study aims to explore the role of traditional schools as a political identity space in shaping and reflecting the social identity of Osing youth. Using a qualitative approach and ethnographic methods, this study explores the experiences of youth in their involvement in the Pesinau traditional school. The findings show that traditional schools function not only as a place to preserve local cultural values, but also as a forum for building collective awareness, strengthening identity, and becoming a cultural protection from global domination. This study investigates how Islamic da’wah can serve as a strategic instrument in strengthening civic engagement within democratic societies. Civic engagement is the active participation of citizens in public life, including policy-making, government oversight, and involvement in solving social problems. It is a crucial element in maintaining a fair and participatory democratic system. In the context of Muslim communities, Islamic da’wah not only aims to convey religious teachings but also seeks to instill universal values such as justice, equality, consultation (shura), empathy, and social responsibility—principles that form the foundation of democratic life. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were gathered from secondary sources such as books, academic journals, and relevant articles related to Islamic da’wah, civic engagement, and democracy. This method was chosen to allow for a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the social function of da’wah without conducting field observations or direct interviews. The results of this study show that Islamic da’wah, when practiced contextually and inclusively, can build critical social awareness, encourage public participation, and strengthen constructive social dialogue. Digital da’wah, Islamic value-based social campaigns, and the proactive role of preachers as agents of change become key elements in bridging Islamic teachings with democratic values. Furthermore, participatory da’wah empowers marginalized groups to become more involved in public discourse. Therefore, Islamic da’wah emerges not only as a spiritual medium but also as a cultural force that supports the development of a just, democratic, and civilized civil society.

This study aims to describe the meaning of signs and values contained in the story of the origin of the Penti ceremony in the Wae Mbeleng community, Benteng Kuwu Village, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The Penti ceremony is one of the important traditional rituals that contains various symbols and cultural values as a form of gratitude to God and ancestors for the harvest and a request for protection in the coming year. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach, which dissects signs through the concept of signifier and signified. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the signs in the Penti ceremony, such as symbols of sacrificial animals, mantras, sacred places, and traditional foods, represent the spiritual relationship of the community with God, ancestors, and nature. In addition, values such as ethics, spirituality, kinship, mutual cooperation, as well as educational and social values are reflected in the practice of the ceremony. Thus, the Penti ceremony is not only a form of cultural expression, but also a means of inheriting the noble values of the Manggarai community. This research is expected to contribute to the preservation of local culture and become a reference in the study of cultural anthropology and value education.

This study uses a qualitative literature review methodology to examine the influence of local philanthropy on the formation and sustainability of social welfare systems in Indonesia. Local philanthropy has flourished through religious teachings, cultural values, and community-oriented charitable acts since before colonialism. It has become an essential component of the social framework for addressing poverty, natural disasters, and social injustice. This study examines the evolution of traditional local philanthropic organizations, including zakat, infaq, waqf, gotong royong, and village barns, into a structured and formal framework. The study shows that, in addition to strengthening the national welfare system, local philanthropy pursues strategic goals aimed at increasing social capital and fostering citizen unity. This research shows that the revitalization of local philanthropic principles can significantly replace the establishment of an inclusive, dynamic, and sustainable social welfare system in Indonesia.

This study aims to reveal the value of struggle in the novel The Darkest Side of Heaven by Brian Khrisna through a sociological literary approach. This novel reflects the lives of lower-class people in Jakarta who live under social, economic, and cultural pressures. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study approach. Data are analyzed based on the content of the text that describes the values of the struggle of the characters in the novel. The results of the study show that there are two main values of struggle, namely the value of being willing to sacrifice and the value of never giving up. The value of being willing to sacrifice is reflected in characters such as Sobirin, Juleha, Kuncahyo, and a father who is willing to put aside self-esteem, comfort, and personal needs for the sake of his family. Meanwhile, the value of never giving up is seen from Juleha and Tomi's persistence in facing poverty, as well as Kuncahyo's spirit who continues to work hard even in inhumane conditions. This novel illustrates that the struggle of marginalized people is not only about survival, but also shows strong social values, such as love, sacrifice, solidarity, and optimism. This study confirms that literature functions as a mirror of social reality and a means to foster empathy and social awareness towards the lives of marginalized communities in big cities.
