This study is driven by the researcher’s interest in exploring the various forms of expressive speech acts that appear in the movie “Budi Pekerti.” The primary objective of this research is to identify the types of expressive speech acts performed by the characters in the film. Data were collected using observation and note-taking methods, specifically the free listening approach (simak bebas libat cakap, SBLC) and recording techniques. The analysis was conducted using a pragmatic framework, focusing on dialogue excerpts from the film’s characters. The findings reveal that the characters utilize seven types of expressive speech acts: expressing gratitude, giving praise, apologizing, criticizing, complaining, insinuating, and blaming. This study demonstrates that the expressive speech acts in “Budi Pekerti” are closely tied to the social and cultural context of the story. Each type of expressive speech act conveys functions and meanings that reflect the characters’ emotions and attitudes in specific situations. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of how expressive speech acts are used in film media and serves as a reference for future studies related to language use in diverse social and cultural contexts.

This study aims to describe the types and functions of directive speech acts found in Indonesian language learning interactions at SMP Negeri 3 Gianyar. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the data were obtained through note-taking and recording of teacher–student interactions during classroom activities. The analysis followed four main stages: data reduction, data collection, data display, data interpretation, and conclusion drawing. Directive speech acts, which are utterances intended to prompt the listener to perform a specific action, are an essential component of classroom discourse, as they directly influence student participation, classroom management, and instructional clarity. The findings reveal a total of 109 directive speech act utterances produced by both teachers and students. These utterances are categorized into six types: 18 requests, 52 questions, 22 commands, 3 prohibitions, 10 permissions, and 4 pieces of advice. Each type of directive speech act is used to achieve specific communicative purposes. Further analysis identified 11 distinct functions realized within these utterances, namely: requesting, inviting, pleading, asking, wishing, demanding, directing, instructing, prohibiting, permitting, and advising. For instance, teachers predominantly employed questioning and commanding functions to guide learning processes, check comprehension, and maintain classroom order, while students tended to use requesting and asking functions to seek clarification or assistance. The results of this research highlight the significant role of directive speech acts in facilitating interactive and goal-oriented communication in the language learning environment. Understanding the types and functions of such speech acts can provide valuable insights for educators in designing effective communication strategies that foster active learning, encourage student engagement, and create a positive classroom atmosphere. This study contributes to the broader field of pragmatics and educational linguistics by emphasizing the practical application of speech act theory in Indonesian language teaching contexts.

This study aims to examine the realization of Grice’s cooperative principles in transactional speech acts between sellers and buyers at the Depo Air Minum Isi Ulang Sehat Lestari (Healthy Refill Drinking Water Depot). The cooperative principles consist of four maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The research is motivated by the importance of effective communication in sales interactions, particularly to avoid misunderstandings in conveying intentions and information. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through participatory observation and recorded conversations. The findings indicate that all four maxims were naturally realized in daily interactions. Utterances such as “Mas, air satu” (“One gallon, please”), “Air galon segar loh” (“The water is fresh”), and “Tolong kirim air 10 galon” (“Please deliver 10 gallons”) reflect contextually appropriate and functionally effective applications of the maxims. Furthermore, the use of concise, clear, and straightforward speech structures shows that the cooperative principles are not only evident in content but also in the linguistic form used. These findings highlight that communication in micro-level services such as water refill depots tends to be pragmatic, efficient, and shaped by local social norms and contextual understanding.

The data collection technique is done through documentation, while the data analysis uses the theory of illocutionary speech acts from John Searle which categorizes speech acts into five types: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The results showed that there were 27 data of illocutionary speech acts consisting of 6 assertive, 7 directive, 6 commissive, 5 expressive, and 3 declarative. The findings show that dialog in the film does not only function as a narrative conveyor, but also as a representation of psychological expression, social commitment, and moral and spiritual messages. This study analyzes the pragmatic aspects in the subtitle translation of Mean Girls (2004) from English to Indonesian, focusing on speech acts, implicatures, and politeness strategies. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and recording of film dialogues, then analyzed based on pragmatic theory. The results show that the functions and intentions of speech acts are generally maintained in the translation, although there is a softening of intensity or nuance to fit the norms of Indonesian politeness. In terms of implicature, there is a shift or loss of implied meaning, especially in expressions of humor, irony, and cultural idioms that are difficult to translate directly. Politeness strategies in the original version that tend to be frontal and explicit are often mitigated in translation to conform to Indonesian communication norms that prioritize social harmony. The findings emphasize the importance of cultural sensitivity and pragmatic context understanding in audiovisual translation to effectively convey the meaning and nuances of intercultural communication.

East Javanese shadow puppetry (wayang kulit) features a variety of distinctive performance styles, including Porong, Mojokerto, Malang, Surabaya, Jombang, and Lamongan. Each style has its own unique characteristics in terms of musical accompaniment, puppet design, scene structure, and language used by the puppeteer. One notable puppeteer, Ki Puguh Prasetyo, is known for combining coastal and Gresik-style elements in his performances. A prominent character in his shows is Mujeni, a punakawan (comic servant) who delivers humorous yet meaningful and advisory speech acts. However, not all of Mujeni's utterances are easily understood by the audience, prompting Ki Puguh Prasetyo to explain their meanings during the performance. This study aims to describe the forms and types of speech acts performed by the character Mujeni in Ki Puguh Prasetyo’s East Javanese wayang kulit performances. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from video documentation and transcripts of Mujeni’s utterances. The findings reveal that Mujeni’s speech acts serve not only to entertain but also to convey moral guidance to the audience through distinctive and communicative language use.

This study investigates directive speech acts in Chapter 1 of the Japanese manga *Dandadan*, focusing on how characters use language to influence others’ behavior. The objective is to classify the types of directive utterances and analyze their pragmatic functions based on the speaker and context. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using pragmatic theory to analyze speech data taken directly from dialogue panels. The analysis identified nine instances of directive speech acts, which include commands, prohibitions, invitations, and requests. Ayase Momo emerges as the character who produces the most directive utterances, predominantly in the form of commands and prohibitions, indicating her dominant and assertive communication style. Okarun, in contrast, tends to use polite requests and prohibitions, suggesting a more cautious and respectful approach. The findings reveal that the types of directive speech acts used are closely related to each character’s personality and the emotional context of the scene. These results underscore the role of speech acts in character development and narrative dynamics within manga. The study’s implication lies in showing how linguistic choices in manga dialogue reflect interpersonal power relations and emotional intensity. Future research is encouraged to explore directive speech acts across multiple chapters for broader insights.
