Cici Nugraheni,

Abstract

The increase in the TikTok application continues to increase every year, reaching 109.9 million. This figure is an increase of 18 million users (19%) compared to the same month in 2022 according to the GlobalWbIndex survey (2023). According to Katadata.co.id (2022), it was also found that the number of Tiktok users reached 30% of the Indonesian population and the use of the TikTok application was dominated by users aged 18-24 years, at this age the role of social media is very important to fulfill social needs (Müller et al., 2016). Using TikTok can affect self- esteem and self-quality because TikTok users can view various videos (Rahmasari et al., 2022). Social media has become a part of people's lives where they can interact socially with other users (Zhao et al., 2012). Self-esteem can be increased by using social media (Andreassen et al., 2017), because individuals with low levels of self-esteem will have a tendency to use social media excessively (Blachinio, 2016) so this research aims to determine the correlation between self-esteem and problems, social media use (PSMU) among TikTok users. The hypothesis in this research is that there is a negative relationship between self-esteem and problematic social media use (PSMU). This research consisted of 246 respondents, totaling 180 women and 66 men. The research uses quantitative methods with non- experimental methods and uses two measuring tools: (a) Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale with ? = (10 items) and Problematic TikTok Use Scale with ? = (6 items). The results of analysis using correlation techniques show that there is a negative and significant relationship between self-esteem and problems using social media (r = -0.162 and p = 0.011, p < 0.05). In the difference test study, there was no difference between marital status and gender on self-esteemand PSMU.
