Coastal areas are highly dynamic and increasingly exposed to physical pressures such as coastal erosion, shoreline change, inundation, and sea-level rise. In Indonesia, most coastal vulnerability studies remain focused on physical mapping and have not been systematically integrated with spatial planning evaluation. This study aims to analyze physical coastal vulnerability using the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) and integrate the results with the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) in the coastal areas of Mangarabombang and Laikang Sub-districts, Takalar Regency. A quantitative spatial approach was applied using eight parameters, which were reclassified into vulnerability scores, transformed into CVI values, and classified using quartile methods. The results show that high and very high vulnerability classes dominate the coastal area. Spatial integration reveals that several development zones intersect with high vulnerability levels, indicating potential spatial mismatch. This study confirms that CVI can be operationalized as a spatial evaluation tool to support adaptive and risk-based coastal planning.

Agrarian conflict is a common issue in development processes, particularly when changes in land ownership or control involve various interests. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of agrarian conflict in the coastal area of Atapupu Beach, Jenilu Village, Kakuluk Mesak District, Belu Regency, triggered by the land acquisition process by the Defense University (UNHAN). The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method to understand the social conditions developing in the community. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The results indicate that the conflict arose due to changes in community access to coastal areas previously used for economic activity. The presence of UNHAN has restricted community activities in the Fish Auction Place (TPI) area, previously a center for fishing activities. This situation has given rise to social tensions between the community and the area management. This study emphasizes that coastal area management needs to consider local community interests through a dialogical and participatory approach to minimize agrarian conflict.

The traditional homes of indigenous communities in Indonesia are highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes, due to Indonesia's location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which experiences high seismic activity. This situation demands the strengthening of traditional buildings to withstand potential earthquakes. Stilt houses, as a form of traditional architecture, possess characteristics that actually support earthquake resilience, such as flexible structures, the use of lightweight materials, and the application of local wisdom passed down through generations. With the development of modern construction techniques, stilt houses have the potential to become safer and more adaptable dwellings to earthquake shocks. However, indigenous communities, particularly those living in earthquake-prone areas and with lower levels of education, often face limited knowledge and skills related to the basic principles of earthquake-resistant construction. This lack of understanding results in traditional house construction without considering structural safety aspects, ultimately increasing the risk of serious damage and even collapse during an earthquake. These impacts not only threaten life but also cause significant material losses. This community service activity aims to improve the preparedness and resilience of the Sentani Indigenous community by developing earthquake-resistant stilt house models, increasing knowledge and skills in earthquake-safe house construction and maintenance, and encouraging the use of innovative technology and materials. The expected outcomes are the creation of model houses that can serve as examples and the dissemination of information on earthquake-resistant construction technology.

This study formulates a design concept for the Beach Tourism Resort Area in Botubarani Village by applying tropical architecture that responds to coastal climatic conditions while enhancing the quality of visitor experiences. The research integrates principles of thermal comfort, environmental sustainability, and the ecological potential of coastal environments as the basis for creating climate-adaptive and environmentally responsive tourism areas. The methodology includes site analysis, field observation, climatological assessment, and a literature review related to tropical architecture and coastal tourism design. The collected data were used to determine building orientation, mass layout patterns, visitor capacity, materials, vegetation, and utility systems appropriate for humid tropical climates. The findings show that the site’s position between the sea and the mountains, combined with full-day sun exposure, requires design strategies that maximize cross-ventilation, utilize sloped roofs, provide natural shading, and apply local materials such as wood, bamboo, and red brick. The large spatial needs based on visitor capacity projections are accommodated through a flexible cluster layout that supports visual and functional connectivity between buildings while incorporating green open spaces to enhance microclimate comfort. The utility system is designed using sustainability principles through greywater–blackwater separation, infiltration wells, and recycling-based waste management. This study confirms that the application of tropical architecture in coastal tourism areas can improve thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. These findings guide developing tropical tourism area designs that are more adaptive to climate change and more responsive to visitor needs.

This study aims to analyze the differences in thermal conditions between coastal and riverside settlements, focusing on variations in temperature, humidity, and wind speed during day and night. The research sites include the coastal area of Dusun Karama Tengah (seaside) and Desa Salotengnga (riverside). Measurements indicate that the coastal area experiences more extreme daytime temperature fluctuations, reaching nearly 39 °C, with nighttime temperatures remaining warm and showing noticeable variation among points. In contrast, the riverside area displays more stable temperature patterns, with nighttime temperatures ranging between 28–30 °C. Relative humidity along the coast increases consistently at night, whereas in the riverside area it is heterogeneous, varying from saturated to very dry conditions. Wind speed serves as a key differentiating factor: the coastal area is still influenced by land–sea breezes, while the riverside environment tends to be stagnant with weak natural ventilation. These findings highlight distinct thermal comfort challenges in both settings—coastal areas are prone to daytime heat stress, whereas riverside areas face nighttime discomfort due to humidity and air stagnation. The results provide a foundation for adaptive architectural and spatial design strategies responsive to local microclimatic contexts.

The black sea cucumber (Holothuria atra) holds significant ecological and economic value in tropical marine ecosystems, including those of Maluku, Indonesia. This study aimed to estimate population density, spatial distribution patterns, and their relationship with environmental conditions along the Haenesai coast, Hulung Village, Taniwel District, West Seram Regency. Sampling was carried out using the belt transect method (50 m × 2 m) at three stations with three replications, while physicochemical parameters of seawater (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and transparency) were measured in situ. A total of 96 individuals of H. atra were recorded, with an average density of 10.6 ind/100 m². Station I exhibited the highest density (13 ind/100 m²), whereas Station II showed the lowest (9.3 ind/100 m²). Distribution patterns were generally uniform at Stations I and II, while Station III displayed a clustered pattern. These variations are likely influenced by differences in water transparency, dissolved oxygen, and substrate heterogeneity that affect food availability. Overall, environmental conditions remained suitable for H. atra, although evidence of exploitation pressure from local harvesting was observed. Ecologically, H. atra plays a critical role as a bioturbator, maintaining sediment quality and coastal ecosystem stability. This study highlights the need for regulated harvesting, habitat protection, and aquaculture development as strategic measures for the sustainable management of sea cucumber resources in Maluku.

This study aims to analyze the authority structure between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and Regional Governments in managing coastal areas through marine spatial utilization following the enactment of Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning the Stipulation of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation into Law. The main instrument studied is the Confirmation of Conformity of Marine Spatial Utilization Activities (KKPRL), which functions as a licensing instrument and a control mechanism to ensure that marine spatial utilization activities remain directed, integrated, and aligned with the principles of ecological, social, and economic sustainability. The research approach used is a juridical-empirical approach with a qualitative descriptive analysis method. Through this approach, the research not only examines legal norms but also captures the practice of implementing authority in the field. The results show that although the Job Creation Law is oriented towards simplifying business licensing, several problems remain that have implications for the effectiveness of coastal governance. These issues include disharmony between central and regional regulations, overlapping authority between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKPRL) and regional governments, and weak synchronization between national policies and regional instruments such as the Coastal and Small Islands Zoning Plan (RZWP3K). In addition to regulatory constraints, this study also highlights institutional and technical aspects. Limited human resource capacity in the regions, a lack of understanding of KKPRL procedures, and minimal inter-agency coordination hamper the effectiveness of coastal management. These conditions result in slow investment realization, conflicts over spatial use, and potential coastal environmental degradation. Therefore, this study recommends a strategy for harmonizing authority through improving vertical-horizontal coordination, strengthening the institutional capacity of regional governments, and developing derivative regulations consistent with the principles of good governance.
