Education involves acquiring knowledge and skills, with English learning being a skill-based process that requires consistent and engaging practice. In the digital era, mobile applications have emerged as effective tools to overcome traditional limitations in language learning. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in enhancing English vocabulary among university students. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 40 first-semester Pharmacy students at Anwar Medika University. Participants engaged in daily Duolingo practice (20 XP per day) for 30 consecutive days. Data were collected through vocabulary pretest and posttest as well as a Likert-scale questionnaire. Quantitative analysis revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary scores, with the mean score increasing from 57.25 in the pretest to 81.70 in the posttest. Questionnaire results indicated high student motivation, positive perceptions of the app’s usefulness and ease of use, and minimal perceived disadvantages. The findings suggest that daily Duolingo practice is an effective, engaging, and accessible method for boosting English vocabulary acquisition. This study provides practical insights for educators seeking innovative technology-integrated approaches to language teaching.

English speaking skill is a crucial competence for university students, particularly those involved in student organizations focusing on language development. Members of English clubs are expected to actively use English in academic and organizational contexts; however, many still face challenges related to pronunciation accuracy, fluency, limited active vocabulary, and low confidence. These challenges are often caused by limited structured speaking practice and insufficient integration between digital learning tools and communicative pedagogy. This community service program aimed to enhance the English-speaking skills of members of the Bhamada English Club at Universitas Bhamada Slawi through the utilization of the Duolingo application integrated with a Task-Based Learning (TBL) approach. The program was implemented through three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Activities included needs analysis, speaking pre-test, guided Duolingo practice focusing on pronunciation and speaking features, task-based speaking activities, and post-test evaluation. The results demonstrated improvements in pronunciation accuracy, speaking fluency, and participants’ confidence in using English orally. The integration of Duolingo as a source of comprehensible input and Task-Based Learning as a communicative output strategy proved effective in enhancing speaking skills. This program indicates that technology-supported task-based instruction can serve as an effective and sustainable model for improving English speaking skills among university students.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of the artificial intelligence-based application (AI-Based Application) Duolingo in improving vocabulary mastery of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students in Indonesia. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with a single-group pre-test and post-test design involving 20 students of class VII C of SMP Negeri 1 Mappakasunggu. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, questionnaires, and classroom observations. The results showed a significant increase in students' vocabulary mastery, marked by an increase in the average score from 61 (fair category) in the pre-test to 78 (good category) in the post-test. Most students gave a positive perception of the use of Duolingo, especially regarding the gamification features, instant feedback, and simple and attractive display, which can increase motivation and learning engagement. The results of the observation also showed that students were more active and enthusiastic in using this application compared to traditional learning methods. Thus, Duolingo can be said to be effective as an AI-based learning medium to improve vocabulary mastery of junior high school students in Indonesia.

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in helping 10th-grade students at SMK Al-Kautsar Sriwijaya master English vocabulary. This research is based on the understanding that vocabulary is a crucial foundation in English language learning, and Duolingo's potential as an innovative digital learning tool. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental method, we compared two groups of students: one group learned using Duolingo (the experimental group) and the other used traditional methods (the control group). The subjects of this study were all 10th-grade students at SMK Al-Kautsar Sriwijaya for the 2024/2025 academic year. Two classes were specifically selected (purposive sampling) to be the experimental and control groups. To measure vocabulary mastery, both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test. The collected data were then quantitatively analyzed using an independent t-test to determine the difference in average post-test scores between the two groups. The analysis results showed a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students who used Duolingo and those who did not. The experimental group's average post-test score was significantly higher. This demonstrates that the Duolingo application is effective in improving students' English vocabulary mastery. Therefore, Duolingo can be recommended as an innovative and engaging vocabulary learning tool for use in schools.

This study examined the role of mobile-based language learning applications, particularly Duolingo, in supporting self-directed English language learning. Using a qualitative approach through literature review, this research analyzed various academic studies published between 2018 and 2024 that focused on the effectiveness of Duolingo in improving vocabulary, grammar, and learning motivation. The results indicated that Duolingo helped learners develop consistent study habits and fostered autonomy through its gamified features. In addition, the app offered a flexible and engaging learning environment. However, limitations were found in speaking skill development and social interaction, which the application did not fully support. Overall, Duolingo serves as a useful supplementary tool in learning English, but it should be combined with other methods for more comprehensive outcomes.

This research looks into how well Duolingo and YouTube help people learn Japanese. A quantitative approach was taken, gathering information from 35 individuals through an online questionnaire. Participants were chosen based on whether they used Duolingo, YouTube, or both platforms. The questionnaire explored their past learning experiences, how they use these platforms, their preferences, how effective they think these tools are, and what challenges they encountered while learning. The findings reveal that most of the participants already had some background in Japanese and preferred online resources due to their accessibility, no cost, and fun features. Duolingo was liked for its organized, game-like approach, whereas YouTube was appreciated for its authentic, visual materials. A lot of people enjoyed learning at their own pace, finding listening and pronunciation to be useful strategies. Some individuals struggled with staying motivated and dealing with complicated grammar rules. To sum up, both Duolingo and YouTube are good resources for learning basic Japanese, especially for those studying on their own. However, they work best when used alongside other resources. It is suggested to combine digital tools with guidance from teachers for the best outcomes.
