This article examines umpasa as the determinant of the validity of the Mangalahat Horbo ritual and as a vehicle for transmitting the cultural values of the Batak Toba people from an anthropolinguistic perspective. Mangalahat Horbo is a buffalo sacrifice ritual that functions simultaneously as a cosmological, political, and linguistic event. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using three theoretical frameworks: Dell Hymes' (1974) SPEAKING model to analyze the ritual as a speech event, Roland Barthes' (1968) semiotics to dissect the denotative and connotative meanings of umpasa, and Kluckhohn's (1953) theory of cultural values and Sibarani's (2014) local wisdom theory to identify embedded cultural values. The findings reveal that umpasa operates on three simultaneous layers of meaning: pragmatic-performative, social-hierarchical, and cosmological-ecological. Umpasa is not merely an aesthetic ornament but a constitutive element of the ritual that shapes the social and cosmological reality of the Bius community. Eight cultural values are identified: communicative courtesy, adat knowledge transmission, self-restraint, collective responsibility, cultural preservation, cosmological reciprocity, distributive justice, and ecological harmony. This study affirms the urgency of anthropolinguistic documentation of Mangalahat Horbo before the Parhata masters of umpasa diminish further.

Referring to Abdul Chaer’s semantic theory, this study aims to explain the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the lyrics of the song “Sorai” by Nadin Amizah. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method and uses content analysis techniques to identify words, phrases, and sentences in the lyrics that contain denotative and connotative meanings. The findings of this study indicate that the connotative meaning is more dominant and is manifested through the use of natural symbols and emotional expressions that represent human relationships, the process of healing inner wounds, sincerity, and acceptance of true love. This study found that the lyrics of the song “Sorai” not only function as a way to convey messages literally, but also as a way to express deep feelings. Therefore, by using Abdul Chaer’s theory, song lyrics can reveal layers of meaning and demonstrate the power of language as an emotional and aesthetic medium in musical works.

This study examines the denotative and connotative meanings in Mahmoud Darwish's poem "Fakkir Bighairik" using a semantic approach. Language as a sign system has a primary function in conveying meaning, and poetry is the medium of linguistic expression richest in such meaning. Darwish's poem, through dense diction, depicts empathy, humanity, and the struggle of the Palestinian people by inviting readers to "think of the other." This study uses a descriptive-qualitative method with library techniques, where data is taken from the text of Fakkir Bighairik's poem and analyzed based on the theory of denotative and connotative meaning. The results show that the denotative meaning in this poem conveys a direct and straightforward message, while the connotative meaning provides emotional, social, and moral depth that strengthens the humanitarian message. The combination of these two meanings creates a poetic effect that awakens readers' awareness of solidarity and universal human values. In addition, this poem also invites readers to reflect on their role in the humanitarian struggle and reminds them of the importance of fighting for human rights amidst conflict.

Panji Kahirupan Dance is a Cirebonese mask dance created by H. Taufik Hidayat, the founder of Sanggar Ki Bagus Rangin. This dance portrays the journey of human life, from pre-birth to adulthood, inspired by the changing characters (wanda) of the Cirebon mask tradition. This study aims to describe and analyze the symbolic meanings embedded in the Panji Kahirupan Dance. The research uses a qualitative method with a semiotic approach, allowing the researcher to explore both the denotative and connotative meanings of the symbolic elements in the dance. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and validated using triangulation of techniques and sources. The data analysis involves data reduction to select relevant information, data presentation to synthesize findings, and conclusion drawing to interpret the symbolic meanings of each performance element. The costumes carry symbolic meanings through their colors: white represents the sanctity of life’s beginning, yellow symbolizes spirit, and red denotes ambition. The soft gamelan music contributes to a spiritual and contemplative atmosphere. The floor patterns, such as circles and straight lines, symbolize the life cycle and life’s purpose.

This study is entitled Semiotic Analysis of Absurdism through the Main Character in the Film Trainspotting. The discussion touches upon the concept of absurdism and how it is reflected through signs in the film Trainspotting (1996), directed by Danny Boyle. The film portrays the life of Mark Renton, a heroin addict living in 1990s Scotland, who struggles to find meaning in an indifferent world. This research analysed the denotative and connotative signs that reflect the main character’s struggle with absurdism and how these signs portray the character’s responses to the absurd, whether through escape or rebellion. This study employed Roland Barthes’ (1991) theory of two-level semiotics to analyse the denotative and connotative meanings of signs, and Albert Camus’ (1955) theory of absurdism to interpret the character’s existential responses. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected by watching the film and analysing both verbal and non-verbal signs using Barthes’ semiotic framework. These findings indicate that Trainspotting contains strong elements of absurdism that can be uncovered through semiotic analysis.

The ability to understand denotative and connotative meanings is important in supporting the development of students' literacy and critical thinking skills in elementary schools. However, in practice, students still have difficulty in distinguishing the two types of meanings, especially in the context of connotative sentences that are figurative and require contextual interpretation. This study aims to analyze the ability of sixth grade elementary school students to identify and understand denotative and connotative meanings through various forms of questions, namely multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and descriptive, with a qualitative approach using the case study method. The steps of the case study include determining the focus of the study, literature review, case selection, data collection, data processing, data analysis, negotiation of results, and conclusions. The subjects of the study consisted of five sixth grade elementary school students who were analyzed based on their answers to the instruments that had been prepared. The results of the study showed that students had a good basic understanding of denotative and connotative meanings in explicit form. However, they still had difficulty in interpreting connotative meanings contextually and figuratively. The novelty of this study lies in the use of a contextual learning approach that is relevant to students' social and cultural lives, which has been proven to improve students' ability to understand meaning reflectively and critically.

This study examines the dynamics of meaning, symbolism, and interpretation in Buddhist religious texts through semantic and hermeneutic approaches using qualitative methods. The research explores how the structure of meaning in texts such as the Dhammapada and Sutta Pitaka shapes understanding of Buddhist values, and how teachings in symbols such as the Middle Way, Three Jewels, and Nirvana undergo transformations of meaning according to cultural contexts. The findings show that the understanding of Buddhist text meanings is not fixed, but dynamic, formed through interactions between text, context, and readers. This research employs semantic analysis to identify denotative and connotative meanings, combined with hermeneutic interpretation following Gadamerian and Ricoeurian frameworks. The results reveal that Buddhist symbols carry multilayered meanings that require contextual interpretation, contributing to contemporary understanding and application of Buddhist teachings in diverse cultural settings

Advertising is one of the mass communication media in the form of visual, audio, writing, or a combination of audio-visual. As with any communication in general, every advertisement must have an implicit or explicit meaning contained therein which is addressed to the public. Marajan as one of the syrup products in Indonesia, often makes advertisements that are full of meaning with attractive packaging. The purpose of this study is to find out the meaning of the dragon in Marjan 2023 advertisement "Baruna Sang Guardian of the Ocean" by using a qualitative descriptive theory approach and Roland Barthes' Semiotics theory which interprets something based on the denotative and connotative meanings of signifiers, signifieds and signs that exist in an object. The results of this study indicate that the dragon in the ad refers to a social disaster caused by humans who often throw plastic waste into the ocean.
