Interpersonal communication is fundamental in building relationships between individuals. The Indonesian version of My Annoying Brother (2024) depicts how interpersonal communication between two brothers, Kemal (Angga Yunanda) and Jay (Vino G. Bastian), affects their character development. This study aims to analyze the pattern of interpersonal communication in the film and explore the moral message contained in it. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with semiotic analysis of the Roland Barthes model. The results of the study show that interpersonal communication in this film consists of dididic (two people) and triadic (three people) communication, which occurs primary (direct) and secondary (through the media). This communication helps in building character such as responsibility, empathy, and sacrifice. The film also contains a strong moral message about the importance of effective communication in improving relationships and building positive characters.

Using smartphones in interpersonal communication among adolescents is now commonplace. Many teenagers who follow the flow of communication media in technology choose smartphones as a more effective interpersonal communication medium. Compared to other forms of communication, interpersonal communication occurs personally, in face-to-face situations, and through media. Interpersonal communication is fundamental since it permits it to require place dialogic communication. Exchange may be a shape of interpersonal communication that appears in the event of interaction. Those included in this communication frame are double-functioning, each being the speaker and the audience, on the other hand. This report analyzes adolescents’ interpersonal communication culture in the smartphone-use era based on this statement. The method used is the phenomenological method. The conclusion of this study indicates that the current adolescent interpersonal communication culture is more influenced by digital technology than direct interaction. Therefore, efforts are needed to foster awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy quality of interpersonal communication amid technological advances.

This study aims to analyze the types of illocutional speech acts contained in the lyrics of the song Hati-Hati di Jalan karya Tulus. The background of this research is based on the importance of understanding song lyrics as a form of communication that is full of pragmatic meaning, especially in the context of emotions and interpersonal relationships. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a content analysis technique based on the theory of classification of illocutional speech acts by Searle. Data were taken from all song lyrics and analyzed based on five types of illocution speech acts, namely representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The results of the study show that in the lyrics of this song there are four types of illocutional speech acts, namely representative, directive, expressive, and commissive, with a dominance of representative and expressive types. The act of speech reflects various communication functions such as expressing beliefs, expressing feelings, giving hope, and showing commitment. This research implies that song lyrics can be a valuable object of pragmatic study, as well as enriching the understanding of communication strategies through language in popular literary works. This study has limitations on the scope of a single song and the interpretation of the researcher, so it is recommended that the next study examine other songs to broaden the perspective.

The film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap portrays Batak family life with an authentic and emotional approach. This study aims to analyze the authoritarian parenting style implemented by Pak Domu, the head of the family in the film. The research employs a qualitative method with content analysis. Data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews, and literature review. The analysis uses John Fiske’s semiotic approach, which includes three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings reveal that the authoritarian parenting style is reflected through expressions, vocal intonation, behavior, dialogue, character, and conflict throughout the narrative. This parenting style is influenced by conservative, individualistic, fascist, and patriarchal ideologies embedded in the family’s cultural structure. The study highlights that healthy family relationships require honest communication, understanding each member’s feelings and desires, and avoiding coercion in interpersonal interactions. The film’s representation provides broader insight into the impact of authoritarian parenting on family dynamics. Moreover, the film serves as a reflective medium for viewers to recognize the importance of transforming parenting patterns in order to create harmonious family relationships. Therefore, this research contributes to enriching studies on parenting and family relationships within a local cultural context through cinematic representation.

This study aims to assess the extent to which the influence of the empathic communication approach in counseling guidance has an effect on increasing students' self-confidence at the Daarul Uluum Lido Modern Islamic Boarding School. Empathic communication-based counseling guidance services increase students' interpersonal communication skills by 23%. This approach emphasizes the importance of group dynamics as a medium that helps students feel supported by their peers and becomes a foundation for strengthening their self-confidence. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive method to provide an accurate description of the relationship between the empathic communication approach in counseling guidance and student self-improvement at the Daarul Uluum Lido Islamic Boarding School. The results of the study show that empathic communication has a very significant role in building positive relationships between counselors and students. In addition, this study also found that the role of counselors in implementing empathic communication is still not fully optimal, especially in providing deeper emotional validation to students. Some students feel the need to be heard, they still need stronger encouragement to be more confident in expressing their opinions. Therefore, although this approach has proven effective in increasing students' self-confidence, it still needs to be strengthened in certain aspects so that its impact is more optimal.

The world of education has undergone a major shift as a result of advances in information and communication technology. This study compares conventional and digital learning methods for distance learning (PJJ) across the board, with the aim of finding out what is effective, what is not effective, and how the two methods affect student learning outcomes and experiences. Conventional learning, which relies on direct interaction between teachers and students, emphasizes elements such as giving feedback, easy to do, structured, and routine. It has the advantage of being able to facilitate direct interpersonal communication, provide intensive supervision and guidance, and create a competitive learning environment. However, this method has some limitations, especially in terms of time and space flexibility. It is also not able to meet the learning needs of individuals in large groups. On the other hand, digital learning offers greater flexibility, access to a wide range of educational resources, and increased interactivity through the use of online collaboration tools, e-learning platforms, and video conferencing. The use of technology allows learning content to be presented in a systematic, structured and engaging manner, increasing student motivation and participation. In addition, it allows materials to be tailored to each student's learning style and conditions, and supports collaborative and independent learning. Challenges include the possibility of misuse of technology, limited access in some areas, lack of direct social interaction, and reliance on digital infrastructure and capabilities. The research results indicate that digital learning generally enhances student learning outcomes more significantly compared to conventional learning, especially in terms of distance learning (PJJ). Digital strategies such as structured instructional design, integration of practical experiences, motivational support, and time management have been shown to improve student interaction, understanding, and independence. However, digital and conventional learning methods can complement each other to achieve optimal effectiveness. The application of these strategies not only boosts students' academic performance but also equips them with the essential skills to tackle future challenges.

This study explores the dynamics of interpersonal communication between mothers and their children in mitigating the effects of fatherlessness in Bahagia Subdistrict, Bekasi City, Indonesia. Fatherlessness—defined as the absence of a father figure in a child’s emotional and developmental life—has become an increasingly significant social phenomenon, with Indonesia ranking among the highest in the world for fatherless households. The study aims to understand how single mothers manage emotional communication and perform dual parental roles to sustain their children’s psychological well-being. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving three single mothers and four children living in Bahagia Subdistrict. The findings reveal that effective interpersonal communication—grounded in openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality—strengthens emotional bonds, builds trust, and fosters resilience in children growing up without fathers. Moreover, such communication becomes a key coping mechanism that enables mothers to reduce the negative psychological and social consequences of fatherlessness, such as low self-esteem, social withdrawal, and academic decline. The study contributes to the field of family communication by illustrating the adaptive strategies of single mothers in Indonesia as they balance affection, discipline, and economic responsibilities. The results highlight how communication can function not only as an emotional bridge but also as a practical tool for building stability and maintaining harmony in single-parent households.

This study is motivated by the increasing interest in understanding language maxims, which are unwritten rules in communication that regulate a person's language behavior in certain situations. These language maxims were proposed by the philosopher Grice as principles that guide successful communication. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of language maxims in everyday communicative interactions. This study aims to identify how the application of language maxims affects message understanding in different contexts and how violations of these maxims can affect the perception and interpretation of information. The method used in this study includes qualitative analysis of various communicative situations, both in informal and formal contexts. Research was conducted through case studies and observations of interactions between individuals in various communication scenarios. Based on the results of the discussion, it was found that consistent application of language maxims can strengthen understanding and clarity of the message conveyed. However, violation of this maxim can cause uncertainty in the meaning of the message and give rise to different interpretations between the parties involved in the communication. In addition, social, cultural and environmental contexts also play a role in how language maxims are applied and interpreted. This research highlights the importance of appropriateness in applying language maxims to achieve effective communicative goals and emphasizes the need to understand context in interpreting messages conveyed in everyday communication.

Pragmatics, a fundamental branch of linguistics, focuses on the implicit rules that govern human interaction. It delves into how meaning is constructed, conveyed, and interpreted in everyday communication beyond literal language. This study explores the mechanisms of pragmatics in daily life, particularly how context, shared knowledge, and social conventions influence interactions. Key areas examined include speech acts, implicature, and politeness strategies, which highlight the dynamic nature of meaning-making in various social contexts. Speech acts, such as requests, apologies, and promises, illustrate how utterances perform actions beyond their lexical content. Implicature examines how individuals infer meaning that is not explicitly stated, relying on context and shared assumptions. Politeness strategies, which vary across cultures, play a crucial role in managing interpersonal relationships and ensuring smooth communication by balancing social expectations and individual intentions. Understanding these unspoken rules is essential for effective communication, as they often dictate the success of social interactions. Misinterpretations in pragmatics can lead to misunderstandings, social faux pas, or conflicts, emphasizing the importance of cultural and contextual awareness. Pragmatic competence is crucial in multilingual and multicultural settings, where differing conventions and norms can create unique challenges. By synthesizing theoretical insights from existing literature, this study highlights the pervasive influence of pragmatics in shaping human interaction. It underscores the necessity of pragmatic awareness in fostering interpersonal understanding, enhancing communication skills, and navigating the complexities of social life effectively.
