In Indonesia and many other EFL contexts, English is often taught in structured classroom settings that rely on scripted dialogues and controlled practice. This limits students’ exposure to spontaneous, real-life communication, reducing their ability to use English naturally and appropriately in authentic situations. This study investigates the pragmatic competence of Indonesian students during English interview interactions with foreign tourists, using Grice’s Cooperative Principle as the theoretical framework. Five video recordings were analyzed, featuring elementary and secondary students conducting unscripted interviews with tourists at Seminyak Beach, Bali. While the students generally demonstrated adequate grammatical control and vocabulary range, the findings reveal recurring challenges in sustaining natural and cooperative conversations. The most frequent violations involved the Maxims of Relation, Quantity, and Manner, with students often failing to respond appropriately to tourist answers, providing minimal elaboration, or speaking in unclear and disorganized ways. The results highlight the need for English language teaching to include explicit instruction in pragmatic skills, such as turn-taking, topic development, and interactional awareness.

This article explores the integration of creative and historical tourism through a comparative examination of two prominent cultural destinations in East Java, Indonesia: Bandar Grisse in Gresik and the Bung Karno Memorial Park in Blitar. Bandar Grisse, a revitalized old-town district, exemplifies a unique urban tourism model that blends colonial architectural heritage with a contemporary pedestrian-friendly layout reminiscent of Malioboro Street in Yogyakarta. Central to its historical significance is the Garling (Gardu Suling), an iconic heritage structure equipped with a siren, strategically located amidst a multicultural urban fabric encompassing Dutch, Arab, Chinese, and indigenous settlements. The institutionalization of the “Bandar Grisse” tourism brand has catalyzed a series of recurring cultural events, including the annual Bandar Grisse Festival and the biweekly Cokro Ekraf Festival, fostering local creative economies. Complementing this urban heritage is the Bung Karno Memorial Park, a monumental site that not only serves as the final resting place of Indonesia’s first president but also as a locus of national remembrance and civic education. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study underscores the symbiotic relationship between heritage preservation and cultural innovation in promoting sustainable tourism rooted in local identity and historical consciousness.

This study aims to examine the principle of cooperation in pragmatic analysis based on Grice's theory as applied in the Indonesian comedy show Lapor Pak! broadcast on Trans7. The focus of the research is on the violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner as performed by characters such as Andika, Surya, Vincent, Wendy, and Kiki. These violations are analyzed as strategic communicative acts intended to generate humor. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with listening and note-taking techniques applied to purposively selected dialogue transcripts. The findings reveal that the deliberate violations of Grice’s maxims function not as communicative failures, but as rhetorical and pragmatic tools that enhance comedic effect, deliver subtle social criticism, and strengthen character portrayal. Therefore, in the context of entertainment discourse, violating cooperative principles serves as an effective and purposeful pragmatic strategy.

This study aims to examine the realization of Grice’s cooperative principles in transactional speech acts between sellers and buyers at the Depo Air Minum Isi Ulang Sehat Lestari (Healthy Refill Drinking Water Depot). The cooperative principles consist of four maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The research is motivated by the importance of effective communication in sales interactions, particularly to avoid misunderstandings in conveying intentions and information. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through participatory observation and recorded conversations. The findings indicate that all four maxims were naturally realized in daily interactions. Utterances such as “Mas, air satu” (“One gallon, please”), “Air galon segar loh” (“The water is fresh”), and “Tolong kirim air 10 galon” (“Please deliver 10 gallons”) reflect contextually appropriate and functionally effective applications of the maxims. Furthermore, the use of concise, clear, and straightforward speech structures shows that the cooperative principles are not only evident in content but also in the linguistic form used. These findings highlight that communication in micro-level services such as water refill depots tends to be pragmatic, efficient, and shaped by local social norms and contextual understanding.

The production process is a crucial aspect in ink formulation, especially violet spot color inks for gravure printing applications, which cannot be accurately reproduced through conventional process printing systems (CMYK). This research aims to optimize the production parameters of violet gravure inks that often exhibit color instability due to delays in the grinding and adjusting stages. The main focus of this research is to analyze the effect of variations in grinding duration, post-grinding aging time, and the amount of raw material on ink color yield, which is evaluated based on density, CIE Lab*, and ΔE parameters. The methodology used was a descriptive experiment on a laboratory scale. The results showed that the optimal treatment combination of grinding for 90 minutes, aging for 48 hours, and the use of 400 grams of material (P3K2L4) produced the highest density value (1.858) and ΔE (0.572), indicating color stability despite quantity variations. This finding indicates that optimization of grinding and aging time contributes to the improvement of pigment dispersion homogeneity and thermal stability of the resin, even without direct measurement of the transition glass temperature (Tg) value.

This study investigates conversational implicature in the 2024 animated film Inside Out 2 by analyzing characters’ utterances through the lens of Grice’s theory of implicature and cooperative principles. Conversational implicature refers to the implied meanings not directly expressed but inferred through contextual understanding. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study examines both particularized and generalized implicatures, drawing data from selected dialogues in the film and its official transcript. The emotional complexity of the movie—highlighted by the presence of characters such as Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment—provides rich ground for analyzing indirect communication. Findings show that from 28 data items, 25 are particularized implicatures and 3 are generalized. This distribution emphasizes a strong reliance on context-sensitive communication, where meaning emerges from emotional, psychological, and situational cues. Particularized implicatures often occur in emotionally charged interactions, reflecting the characters’ internal struggles and development, particularly Riley’s journey through adolescence. Generalized implicatures, though less frequent, serve to convey socially shared assumptions, enhancing audience understanding in broader, often humorous contexts. The analysis also highlights how the characters’ utterances align with Grice’s maxims. The maxim of relevance is maintained through contextually appropriate responses; the maxim of quantity appears when speakers provide adequate information; the maxim of quality surfaces through honest and sincere exchanges; and the maxim of manner is evident in clear, concise communication. Together, these implicatures and maxims enrich the film’s emotional depth and narrative subtlety.

Literature and film often use universal character patterns, known as archetypes, to explore deep psychological and social themes that resonate across cultures. Recent studies have applied Jungian archetype theory to analyze characters in various films, but few have focused on how these patterns shape emotional journeys in contemporary drama. This study aims to examine the archetypal dimensions of the main character, Otto Anderson, in Marc Forster’s film A Man Called Otto by applying Carl Gustav Jung’s archetype theory. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes selected scenes, dialogues, and monologues to identify and interpret five key archetypes: Self, Ego, Persona, Shadow, and Anima. The findings show that Otto’s character embodies all five archetypes, with the Ego (30,77%) and Shadow (23,08%) dominating his early isolation and emotional defenses, while the Self (11,54%), Anima (15,38%), Persona (19,23%) and emerge as he reconnects with others and moves toward healing. These percentages illustrate the varying influence of each archetype throughout Otto’s journey, highlighting how his psychological transformation is reflected in the shifting dominance of these archetypal patterns. Compared to previous studies that examined archetypes in films such as Enola Holmes, Mcfarland USA, Encanto, The Dark Tower, and The Three Stooges, this research offers a deeper psychological perspective by focusing on the interplay of grief, isolation, and transformation within a dramatic context. The analysis demonstrates the value of archetype theory in understanding character development and highlights how A Man Called Otto reflects universal experiences of loss and resilience in modern cinema.

Background: Research of glucose detection is important in diabetes management and biosensor development. Taking into account the large amount of water retention, the biocompatibility of hydrogels makes them ideal candidates for glucose detection. The PBA groups, when grafted to hydrogel matrices, improve the glucose-related response of the hydrogels significantly. Objective: To create a novel PBA (phenylboronic acid) holographic glucose sensor, MAAm-co-4VPBA, for uninterrupted monitoring of blood glucose levels, which demonstrates the first successful glucose measurement in whole blood using PBA sensors. Methods: Methylacrylamide (MAAm) was copolymerized with 4-vinyl phenyl boronic acid (4-VPBA) by means of free radical polymerization employing 1,6-hexanedioldiacrylate (HDODA) as a crosslinker and the photoinitiator 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone. The responsive glucose behavior of the resulting polymer was characterized in terms of swelling dynamics, ex vivo flow tests, and error grid analysis mechanisms. Results: The MAAm-co-4VPBA polymer exhibits reversible glucose binding via PBA-diol interactions that allow complexation at different pH and concentration levels. Modulation of the responsive elements of the microcapsules by hydrophobic PBA and hydrophilic MAAm units yields maximum swelling and shrinking dynamics at 37 trail degrees. The sensor successfully detected glucose in opaque biological fluids, blood plasma, without any interference from antibiotics or other therapeutics or endogenous compounds. Ex vivo tests showed real-time glucose monitoring without hysteresis. Most importantly, this work is the first to report the use of PBA-based sensors in whole blood for measuring glucose. Conclusion: The MAAm-co-4VPBA holographic sensor possesses outstanding features such as accurate records and strong resistance to chemicals and slow response to detection, confirming its effectiveness in continuous glucose monitoring. Moreover, the ability to operate in the real world enables the aid in clinical diagnosis of diabetes.
