This research departs from the phenomenon of the mushrooming of coffee shops in Makassar, which significantly affects the pattern of activities and social interactions of urban communities. Coffee shops are now an inseparable part of urban life, creating new spaces that are full of symbolic meaning. This research aims to reveal how the transformation of urban people's lifestyles occurs through the existence of coffee shops as public spaces. The approach used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive type, which aims to provide an in-depth picture of this phenomenon through case studies on several coffee shops that represent these characteristics. The results of the study show that coffee shops not only function as a place to enjoy drinks, but also as a public space that reflects the social and cultural identity of the community. The existence of coffee shops creates a symbol of prestige for its visitors, which indirectly makes hanging out in coffee shops an indicator of certain social status. This is closely related to the hedonistic lifestyle, where individuals are willing to spend time and money just to hang out in order to strengthen their self-image in front of the public. In addition, this study also found that coffee shops have become an arena for lifestyle expression influenced by advertisements and trends, where visitors feel the need to adjust their appearance, including wearing clothes that are popular in the latest fashion trends, in order to maintain the existence and social credibility in their environment. Thus, coffee shops in Makassar are not only a place of recreation, but also a social phenomenon that reflects changes in the lifestyle of urban people, which are influenced by aspects of prestige, consumerism, and popular culture dynamics. This research contributes to understanding the role of public spaces such as coffee shops in shaping the lifestyle of modern urban communities.

The essentialist school of philosophy is a school of philosophy that wants humans to return to their old culture. The emergence of this ideology was a reaction to the absolute and dogmatic symbolism of the Middle Ages. In this way, a systematic and comprehensive concept regarding humans and the universe is formed that is in accordance with the needs of the times. This essentialism assumes that education based on the core belief in flexibility in all its forms can produce views that are easily changed, easily swayed, directionless, and less stable. Therefore, education must be based on values that are stable, proven, long-term, and have values that enable a country's education to remain stable and focused. The aim of the essentialist educational philosophy is to improve the character of society through existing cultural heritage, so that later students can contribute to improving social life in the face of changing times that can damage character values. The purpose of this paper is to examine the philosophy of essentialism from the perspective of Islamic education using library research methods. Based on the research results, it is stated that essentialist schools have a view of the field of education, namely educational goals, educational curriculum, educators, students and the environment. Apart from that, there are several views that can be used as measuring tools and should be taken seriously. These are the ontological view, epistemological view and axiomatic view.

This study examines the implementation of the Batar Manaik tradition, a corn-honoring ritual performed annually by indigenous communities, particularly during the corn harvest season. This tradition is not only a form of gratitude for the harvest but also embodies cultural values that strengthen social bonds within the community. The ritual process involves various parties, including farmers, clan leaders (fukun), and community figures, each with important roles and responsibilities. The execution of the tradition begins with a series of stages involving the use of cultural symbols, such as tied corn, chicken blood, and the traditional house (ai lotuk laran) as the center of the ritual. Every tool and material used in the ritual, such as torches and mats, holds deep symbolic meaning. Through this tradition, the community not only celebrates the harvest but also reinforces their cultural identity and spiritual connection with their ancestors and the surrounding environment. This research aims to uncover the significance of each element involved in the BatarManaik ritual and how community participation affects the preservation of this tradition in the modern era.

This study aims to examine the shift in Islamic political thought in Indonesia, from a formalistic approach to a substantive one, as well as the factors that drive this change. The formalistic approach, which emphasizes symbols and the rigid application of Islamic law in the state structure, is increasingly seen as irrelevant to the social-political dynamics of plural Indonesia. In contrast, the substantive approach, which focuses on achieving the social goals of Islam, such as justice and welfare, is considered more adaptable to the needs of modern society. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach, analyzing various relevant sources to identify the paradigm shift in Islamic political thought. The findings indicate that this shift is largely influenced by social developments and political challenges faced by Indonesian society. The implications of these findings highlight the importance of adopting a substantive approach in formulating inclusive public policies that can strengthen social harmony in Indonesia. This approach also offers a new foundation for the development of Islamic political thought that is more relevant to the challenges of the times.

Research using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics in animated films is based on his triadic approach, namely icons, indexes, and symbols, which are used to understand the hidden meaning in every visual and narrative sign. In the context of film analysis, semiotics functions as a tool to dismantle and understand the structure and meaning contained in visual and narrative elements. This analysis can be done using Peirce's icon, index, and symbol approach. Researchers see how these signs play a role in forming the film's main theme or message. Researchers interpret the meaning of these signs in the social, cultural, or ideological context represented by the animated film. This approach is important for understanding how animated films reflect or influence social views on the themes discussed, such as the role of mothers or families. This interpretation also involves analyzing whether these signs contain social criticism or certain moral messages. Based on the results of the analysis, the audience not only sees the mother as a character but also as a symbol of inspiring strength, which can ultimately shape the audience's perception of the importance of the role of mothers in everyday life. Indirectly, the peace that occurs because there is a strong mother figure in carrying out the rebellion, the strength that was born within her because of the sad circumstances of life, the heartbreaking loss, the circumstances full of suffering. From the film it can be seen that the strength and sacrifice of a mother is extraordinary.

The important role of murals in building the architectural and visual identity of a city. Murals have become an integral part of public spaces in many cities, not only as beautiful works of art, but also as a medium to convey social, cultural and political messages. In the urban context, murals play a key role in building the image and character of a city, especially by utilizing open spaces that are often not optimally utilized. The identity of a city is not only determined by its buildings and physical infrastructure, but also by how people interact with the space around them, and murals are an important element in this process. With a deep understanding of the history, aesthetics and symbolism of murals, we can see how this medium can be utilized to create a more vibrant, meaningful urban environment that reflects local identity. This topic is very interesting and important in the context of current urban development, and this abstract provides an overview of the initial focus of research that will explore the findings and apply relevant practices.

This study examines the interpretation of verbal and visual signs in the cutscenes of the video game Elden Ring. Semiotics, the study of signs and their meanings, provides the framework for analyzing these cinematic elements. Video games often embed narrative clues within visual and verbal signs, but players frequently overlook them, particularly during cutscenes, which interrupts gameplay to deliver critical story content. This research focuses on the main boss cutscenes in Elden Ring, which integrate environmental storytelling and visual signs to convey the lore of The Lands Between. Utilizing Peirce’s theory of signs and Barthes’ theory of meaning, the study identifies and classifies visual signs—icons, indices, and symbols—within the cutscenes to interpret their narrative significance. The data is derived from eight main boss cutscenes recorded during gameplay and supplemented by external visual references. A qualitative approach was employed, encompassing data collection through documentation, detailed visual analysis, and descriptive presentation of findings. Results indicate that Elden Ring’s cutscenes are rich with embedded signs that enhance the storytelling experience, though their nuanced meanings often require active interpretation and community discussion. This research underscores the importance of cutscenes in contributing to the depth and immersion of the game’s narrative.

Respect for ancestors is a key aspect of Chinese culture, expressed through the practice of Kong Tek, a ritual ceremony that includes prayers, offerings, and the burning of symbolic items to support the well-being of ancestral spirits in the afterlife. In contrast, Christian theology emphasizes salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and prohibits practices that involve contact with spirits. This journal analyzes the differences and similarities between Christian teachings and Kong Tek practices and offers advice for Chinese Christians in balancing their faith and culture.
