At present, little is known in Nigeria and globally about the association between stress and cortisol secretion in normotensive and preeclamptic pregnant women. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that involves high blood pressure and organ damage, and it has been associated with various physiological alterations. This study aims to determine the comparative levels of cortisol, a stress marker, in preeclamptic pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Cortisol levels are known to fluctuate in response to stress, and altered levels may indicate an underlying pathophysiological process. Forty (40) consenting pregnant women were recruited from St. Philomina Catholic Hospital, Edo State, Nigeria. Blood samples were collected and spun in a bucket centrifuge at 2500 RPM (rounds per minute) for 10 minutes. The plasma was stored frozen in plain sample bottles and analyzed for cortisol levels using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The data obtained were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 9 software. Results were expressed as mean ± SEM, and a P-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The study found that cortisol levels significantly increased from 226.4 ± 36.53 nmol/L in normotensive women to 370.7 ± 36.47 nmol/L in preeclamptic women (p<0.05, <0.0081). This increase was statistically significant, suggesting that elevated cortisol levels in preeclamptic women may be linked to stress and potentially to oxidative stress cascade activation. These findings contribute to the understanding of stress-related physiological changes in preeclampsia and may offer insights for future diagnostic or therapeutic approaches.

Leadership is often associated with symbols, one of which is the rank insignia worn by regional leaders in Indonesia. This symbol is believed to provide legitimacy and authority to leaders; however, its effectiveness remains debatable, especially when compared to regional leaders in other countries who do not wear rank insignia. This study analyzes rank insignia from the perspectives of Christian theology and leadership psychology to understand its impact on performance, competence, and public perception of leadership. From a Christian theological perspective, ideal leadership emphasizes service over symbolic authority. Meanwhile, in psychological studies, rank insignia can enhance a leader’s confidence but may also create psychological distance from the public and increase mental pressure. This study compares the effectiveness of regional leadership with and without rank insignia, considering factors such as competence, transparency, and public participation. The analysis reveals that the substance of leadership is more important than visual symbols such as rank insignia. These findings provide implications for developing leadership based on performance and inclusivity, while also encouraging further research on the psychological impact of leadership symbols in modern governance.

Background: Duration of labor is a key determinant of childbirth outcomes and may influence the mother’s physiological and psychological state. Prolonged labor is often associated with increased maternal fatigue and emotional stress, which can delay the establishment of early maternal-infant bonding during the taking-hold period. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. A total of 80 postpartum women who delivered vaginally at hospitals and maternity clinics were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an observation sheet for labor duration and the Maternal Postnatal Attachment Scale (MPAS). Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson’s correlation test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between labor duration and maternal-infant bonding scores (r = -0.432; p = 0.002). Mothers who experienced labor longer than 12 hours demonstrated lower emotional closeness with their infants compared to those with shorter labor (<8 hours). Conclusion: Prolonged labor tends to hinder the development of early maternal-infant bonding. Emotional support and midwifery assistance during the labor process are essential to enhance bonding and psychological well-being in the postpartum period.
