This study explores the metaphor of life in Colleen Hoover’s novel Reminders of Him, aiming to identify the types of linguistic metaphors and analyze the conceptual metaphors that underlie them. Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, which classifies metaphors into structural, ontological, and orientational categories, this study highlights the role of metaphor as a cognitive tool, not merely a stylistic device. A qualitative method was employed, with data collected using AntConc software by focusing on parts of the novel containing the word “life.” The Metaphor Identification Procedure was applied to identify linguistic metaphors, which were then categorized based on the word class of the lexical units that were used metaphorically. The results of this study show four types of linguistic metaphors involving the noun “life”: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and prepositional. These forms portray life as a physical object, a process, a possessed attribute, or a container. These linguistic metaphors reflect eight conceptual metaphors, including five ontological metaphors (life is ownership, life is a container, life is an entity, life is air, life is a place) and three structural metaphors (life is a machine, life is a journey, life is a challenge). The diversity of these conceptual metaphors illustrates the rich representation of life in the novel.

This study aims to analyze the use of italics and capital letters in the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis based on the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI). This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with text analysis techniques on quotations in the novel that contain italics and capital letters. The results of the study indicate that there are various forms of inconsistencies in the use of italics, especially in words in regional languages (Javanese), foreign terms, and non-standard words that are not italicized as they should be. Meanwhile, errors in the use of capital letters were found in the form of inappropriate capitalization of common nouns, greetings, and after punctuation that does not start a new sentence. Of the total data analyzed, more than half of the quotations showed deviations from applicable spelling rules. These errors have an impact on the clarity of meaning, stylistic nuances, and readers' perceptions of the narrative structure. This study emphasizes the importance of spelling accuracy in literary works, not only as a technical aspect, but also as part of the rhetorical and aesthetic power of the text. These findings are expected to be a reference in editing literary works and teaching Indonesian based on spelling.

This research examines the persuasive strategies used by student candidates in the 2020 Head Boy election at The Fulham Boys School in London, England. Specifically, on how teenagers convey persuasive messages in a formal school-based leadership context to persuade their peers. The study aims to identify and categorize the persuasive elements of their campaign speeches through Petty and Cacioppo's the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) which differentiates between central (logical, content driven) and peripheral (emotional, stylistic) routes to persuasion. With a qualitative descriptive approach, the campaign speeches were collected in video format and transcribed, then they were content analyzed according to several categories. Each persuasive statement was classified according to the ELM principles. All four candidates were found to be applying center and peripheral routes and had responsibility of both audience demands and the leadership image. Some candidates were predisposed to use rational solutions, while others made more use on emotional appeals. This highlights the complexities involved in a student speaker's role in a leadership speech that balanced the appeal of the message against the message itself.

The present study aims to identify and analyse idiomatic expressions in the lyrics of "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift. Idioms are a form of non literal expression which often pose a challenge for English language learners, due to the fact that their literal meanings are not easily discernible. Utilising a descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyses idioms based on Makkai's (1972) classification, which includes six types: phrasal verb idioms, tournure idioms, irreversible binomial idioms, phrasal compound idioms, incorporating verb idioms, and pseudo idioms. The findings indicate that the composition is replete with idiomatic usage, reflecting emotional meanings and social messages implicitly. A total of fourteen idioms were identified, which serve to reinforce Taylor Swift's stylistic language and make the song an effective and contextual medium for the purposes of English language learning. It is anticipated that these findings will contribute to the development of language teaching, particularly with regard to the comprehension of idiomatic meaning within the context of popular culture.

This study describes the morpho-stylistic and the semantic-stylistic features used in the top four songs of Arctic Monkeys’ AM album, namely, “I Wanna Be Yours,” “Do I Wanna Know?”, “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” and “No. 1 Party Anthem.” This research conducted using a qualitative descriptive method derived from the linguistic deviation theory by Leech analyses of the lyrical texts for their morphological and semantic deviations like informal contractions, neologism, objectification, metaphors and irony. Taking language out of the box, the findings show that Arctic Monkeys have consistently broken linguistic norms in order to produce emotionality, stylistic nuance and lyrical uniqueness. This study aims to analyze the song “Bayar Bayar Bayar” using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach based on Teun A. van Dijk’s model. The song was selected due to its explicit criticism of corruption and abuse of power within the Indonesian police institution. The analysis covers three main dimensions in Van Dijk’s theory: discourse structure (macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure), social cognition, and social context. The analysis reveals that thematically, the song represents the collective experience of society in facing bureaucratic injustice, particularly in the form of illegal levies by the authorities. Its repetitive and straightforward superstructure strengthens the main message. At the microstructural level, the use of direct language, punk-styled stylistics, and the rhetorical repetition of “bayar polisi” (pay the police) create a provocative effect and reinforce the social critique being delivered. In terms of social cognition, the song reflects the public's mental model of the police as an institution that perpetuates social inequality rather than acting as a neutral protector. From a social context perspective, the song emerges from the reality of unequal power relations between citizens and authorities, serving as a symbolic form of resistance against hegemonic power structures. “Bayar Bayar Bayar” is thus not only a musical work but also an ideological expression with critical discourse value in advocating for social justice.

This study explores the concepts of Al-Istikhdam and Al-Istithrad as part of stylistic devices in the Arabic rhetoric discipline (balaghah). Al-Istikhdam refers to the use of a single word with two different meanings in a specific context, while Al-Istithrad involves the insertion of additional sentences or ideas without deviating from the main discussion. The study aims to identify the application of these two concepts in classical Arabic texts, particularly in literary and rhetorical works. The method employed is textual analysis of primary sources such as the Qur'an, hadith, and classical poetry. The findings reveal that Al-Istikhdam is used to enrich meanings and refine stylistic expression, whereas Al-Istithrad functions to provide additional explanations that strengthen the main argument without disrupting narrative flow. This research is expected to offer new insights into the beauty and complexity of the Arabic language and its contribution to the development of balaghah studies.
