This study aims to identify the application and violation of the principles of politeness according to Geoffrey Leech in the village government WhatsApp group communication. The phenomenon of language use in institutional digital communication often ignores the elements of politeness, even though communication is carried out in a professional context. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. The data studied are in the form of speech or written messages sent by members of the Bendung Village Government WhatsApp group, Jetis District, Mojokerto Regency. Data collection techniques are carried out through reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis is carried out using interactive analysis techniques including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show the application of the six maxims in communication in the village government WhatsApp Group based on Geoffrey Leech's principles of politeness, between the maxim of agreement, the maxim of wisdom, the maxim of praise, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of sympathy, and the maxim of humility appearing in forms of communication. This application shows that digital media does not eliminate the values of politeness, but rather becomes an adaptation of a more flexible but ethical communication strategy. Furthermore, micro-frequencies of violations of the maxim of agreement, the maxim of wisdom and the maxim of sympathy were also found in the context of conveying sensitive, technical or administrative information. This study emphasizes the importance of awareness of polite language in official digital communication, especially in the village bureaucratic environment.

This study explores the politeness strategies used in netizens’ comments on the policy of disbursing regional ASN teacher allowances across three social media platforms: Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. The research is grounded in the growing phenomenon of public opinion expression in digital spaces, which often reflects varying levels of language politeness. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of politeness strategies used, examine the differences between platforms, and uncover the influencing factors. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study applies Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. Data were collected from user comments on a speech by President Prabowo Subianto regarding ASN teacher allowance distribution. The findings indicate that negative politeness and impoliteness strategies dominate across all platforms, with varying patterns. Facebook and TikTok featured more direct and sarcastic comments, while Instagram tended to display more indirect and polite expressions. Influencing factors include platform characteristics, the content of the speech, and the personal experiences of users. These findings contribute to digital pragmatics studies and offer practical insights for promoting ethical communication on social media.

This study aims to describe the forms of linguistic politeness and impoliteness in the novel Dilan: He Was My Dilan in 1990 by Pidi Baiq. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with Leech's (1983) politeness maxims theory as the analytical framework. Data were obtained from utterances in character dialogues and narration in the novel. The findings reveal that the six politeness maxims tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy are present in various contexts of adolescent communication in the novel. Furthermore, impoliteness appears through violations of these maxims, such as the use of harsh language, sharp sarcasm, and raised intonation. This study concludes that Dilan 1990 not only reflects adolescent social realities but also serves as a mirror of pragmatic practices in contemporary Indonesian cultural contexts.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of smartphone use on politeness norms among adolescents in Teluk Lerong Ulu Village and the polite behavior of adolescents who use smartphones in Teluk Lerong Ulu Village. The study was conducted in Teluk Lerong Ulu Village, precisely on Banggeris Street, with the subjects of the study being several adolescents and also the community through the stages of observation, interviews, and documentation using qualitative descriptive research.  The results of the study indicate that the use of smartphones has a positive impact as an effective means of obtaining information about politeness, facilitating communication, and increasing ethical awareness on social media. However, excessive use of smartphones also has a negative impact on adolescents, such as decreasing the ability of adolescents to interact directly, ignoring the presence of people around them, and increasing the use of coarse and impolite language in digital communication. The polite behavior of adolescents who use smartphones in Teluk Lerong Ulu Village includes politeness in attitude, behavior and speech.These three aspects complement each other so as to create harmonious sosial interactions, build adolescent personalities so that they are able to position themselves appropriately in everyday life.

This study is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to describe sexual education provided by parents at Taman Firdaus Christian Kindergarten, Balige, North Sumatra. Data were obtained through direct interviews with the Principal, teachers, and several parents. The results showed that teachers and parents at Taman Firdaus Christian Kindergarten had provided basic teaching about the physical differences between boys and girls. However, an explanation of the genitals and their names had not been given because it was considered inappropriate for the age of the children. The main focus of teaching was on norms of politeness and privacy, although a comprehensive understanding of sexuality had not been achieved. Understanding of boundaries and privacy was taught by emphasizing the importance of maintaining privacy, such as not showing genitals to the opposite sex and maintaining physical distance. However, there were challenges such as the limitations of school policies in separating boys' and girls' toilets. The use of appropriate language in sexual education has been carried out well, although consistency in the school environment and at home needs to be improved. Parental involvement in children's sexual education is considered important, but there are obstacles in the form of parental discomfort in discussing sexuality topics with their children at home. The descriptive approach in this qualitative study aims to describe in detail the events, phenomena, and social situations that are the focus of the study. Analysis is carried out by giving meaning, interpreting, and comparing the data obtained to gain a deep understanding of the subject being studied.

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic aspects and persuasive strategies in a public service advertisement entitled "Throw Trash in Its Place. The Earth is Not Your Trash Can." This study uses a pragmatic approach with a focus on the theory of speech acts, implicature, deixis, and politeness of language to reveal how to convey messages effectively and persuasively in the context of public communication. The advertisement is analyzed as a form of directive communication that aims to encourage changes in people's behavior towards issues of cleanliness and environmental concern. The results of the analysis show that this advertisement utilizes strong but polite directive speech acts, normative implicatures to instill values, the use of personal deixis to build closeness with the audience, and positive and negative politeness strategies to maintain social relations. Thus, advertisements not only function as a medium for conveying information, but also as an instrument for forming collective awareness through a communicative approach that is contextual, efficient, and emotionally and rationally appealing to its audience.  

The purpose of this study is to determine the maxims of politeness of language used when communicating with lecturers via WhatsApp. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach method, data collection techniques, namely interviews and observations, other supporting data, namely screenshots of WhatsApp chats of students and lecturers. And using the word "sorry" to respect the interlocutor, sorry for disturbing his time, or disturbing his comfort, in the maxim of wisdom the speaker shows respect for the interlocutor, the maxim of appreciation shows respect for the opinion of the interlocutor, the maxim of generosity shows responsibility, the maxim of simplicity shows the humility and humility of the speaker, the maxim of agreement shows an agreement between lecturers and students, the maxim of sympathy, shows respect and sympathy for the interlocutor. The implementation of Pancasila values ​​in communication ethics between students and teachers is an important aspect in creating a harmonious and character-based educational environment. This study aims to describe how the implementation of Pancasila values ​​in communication ethics between students and teachers at SMK Pemuda 1 Kesamben. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques that include observation, interviews, and documentation studies. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. To ensure the validity of the data, data triangulation techniques are used. The results of this study show that the implementation of Pancasila values ​​in student and teacher communication is reflected in three main indicators: (1) Politeness (the principles of Divinity and Humanity) can be seen from the choice of good and not rude words, the use of good language, and the right tone of voice. (2) Effectiveness of communication (the principle of Democracy) is shown through the delivery of clear and easy-to-understand opinions and maintaining communication on track. (3) Mutual respect (the principle of Unity and Social Justice) can be seen from respecting the teacher's opinion and respecting differences of opinion, listening when the teacher speaks, and responding wisely when communicating with the teacher. Class XI Accounting students at SMK Pemuda 1 Kesamben have implemented Pancasila values ​​in communication ethics with teachers during the PPKn learning well.

This research is a qualitative descriptive study which aims to describe and analyze politeness in language between characters and then describe the problem as a meaning or new information through the Maxims of content in the Novel Suluh Rindu. The data source for this research is to know the contents of the Novel Suluh Rindu, namely there are 6, then the data collection technique in this research uses reading techniques and note-taking techniques. The data analysis techniques in this research are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research show 1) The wisdom Maxim (tax Maxim) 2) Generosity Maxim  3) Approbation Maxim contained 4) The Modesty Maxim 5) The sympathy Maxim contained in the novel Suluh Miss by Habiburrahman El Shirazy means that in this 6) The Maxim of Agreement (agremeent Maxim) contained in the novel suluh longing by Habiburrahman El Shirazy means that in this novel it functions as a reminder of the importance of tolerance and respect for differences of opinion. By agreeing with other people's opinions and beliefs, we can show that we respect them.

Hikayat Malem Diwa is one of the classic literary works in the Malay-Aceh tradition that is rich in language and cultural values. This story contains various language styles, especially euphemisms and dysphemisms, which reflect social norms, moral values, and conflict dynamics in Acehnese society. This study aims to identify and analyze the forms and functions of these two language styles, emphasizing their semantic and narrative roles. Using a semantic approach and qualitative descriptive methods, data were collected through quotations in the text with documentation techniques, then analyzed based on the context of meaning and use. The results show that euphemisms are often used to convey moral values ​​and politeness, especially in terms of death, respect, and violation of norms. In contrast, dysphemisms appear in the context of violence and character conflict, strengthening the tension and emotion of the story. Overall, the use of these language styles reflects the rhetorical strategies and cultural values ​​of the Acehnese people.

This research explores positive politeness strategies in the 2020 film All the Bright Places by analyzing the characters' dialogue. It is based on Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of positive politeness, supported by Halliday and Hasan's (1989) context of situation framework. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes the film script. Data is collected through documentation, including note-taking and recording techniques, to identify relevant utterances. The findings show that fourteen out of fifteen positive politeness strategies from Brown and Levinson's theory appear in the film. Strategy 4, which uses in-group identity markers, is the most common. The characters often try to build solidarity and emotional connection. Other frequently used strategies include noticing the listener, offering or promising, and seeking agreement. These strategies reflect the characters' efforts to build and maintain relationships, show empathy, and manage social interactions. The study concludes that positive politeness strategies are essential in shaping the film's interpersonal relationships and emotional development. Overall, the research highlights how language use in film reflects psychological and social aspects of communication, offering insights into the role of pragmatics in fictional narratives.

This study aims to analyze the impact of TikTok usage on the politeness behavior of elementary school students. Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this article examines various previous studies related to the topic. The findings indicate that TikTok usage has a significant influence on students' behavior, particularly in terms of politeness. Although there are some positive effects, such as enhanced creativity, self-confidence, and cognitive abilities, the negative impacts are more dominant. Students tend to show a decline in polite behavior, such as the use of harsh language, lack of respect for parents and teachers, and reduced responsibility towards school assignments. High intensity of TikTok usage is one of the main factors contributing to the development of such deviant behavior. Therefore, the role of teachers and parents is crucial in supervising, setting examples, and guiding students to use social media wisely in order to uphold character and moral values.

Since the time of the archipelago, Acehnese culture has maintained a rich and intricate cultural legacy. Due to its advantageous position and status as a commerce route, Acehnese culture was influenced by the cultures of many of the traders that passed through. The purpose of this study is to learn about Acehnese culture from a social and physical standpoint. The information gained from this study's findings will undergo qualitative analysis. With the help of interview rules, this data collecting method is conducted by asking informants questions directly and verbally (face-to-face). In order to generate qualitative data, researchers perform qualitative analysis by giving a detailed and understandable explanation of the problem information. Based on the outcomes of interviews conducted by researchers, the Acehnese tribal community has similarities between physical and social behavior that are still applied in everyday life which are usually presented at traditional events, religious celebrations and cultural celebrations and the Acehnese tribal community is also famous for its traditional traditions and strong religion and highly upheld norms that are still applied in everyday life. These norms include Islamic religious norms, legal norms originating from the Islamic Religion and the 1945 Constitution, politeness norms in dressing in accordance with Islamic teachings, moral norms that closely related to Islamic teachings, and social norms such as courtesy, mutual respect, mutual cooperation and mutual assistance. In this research, it can be concluded that the Acehnese people who live around Medan Tembung sub-district, Medan city, actually still adhere to several norms which are an integral part of their identity and daily life. And also has customs. Social practices and traditions that have been maintained for generations by the Acehnese people reflect the richness of their culture and spirituality. And the Acehnese language not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a symbol of regional identity and pride for the Acehnese people

Talking or chatting is an activity that humans do in their daily lives. In a conversation or discussion, everyone should apply polite language. Language politeness also has different applications, such as for interlocutors who are younger than us, older and on the same level as us. Apart from looking at age, language politeness is also usually related to a person's rank so that its application varies. So the aim is to analyze the politeness of language contained in Deddy Corbuzzier's podcast entitled "Gus Miftah is Angry! This clearly insults the Prophet Muhammad! ANW How about the Rohingya Gus!?”. The method used in this analysis is the literature study method. The theory used in this analysis uses pragmatic theory. Based on the results that have been obtained, the politeness of the language used in this content, in my opinion, is actually used more dominantly by Gus Miftah, starting from speaking words, conveying opinions, and making analogies with something he wants to convey. In this analysis the author found that the implication contained in it is that politeness in language is very important to use in everyday conversations, apart from minimizing misunderstandings that arise due to not paying attention to politeness in language, but politeness in language can also give the impression and assessment of other people regarding etiquette. and our politeness.

This literature review was motivated by Deddy Corbuzier's podcast. Podcasts are a medium for conveying information that is currently widely used by content creators. The aim of this research is to describe the principles of language politeness in Deddy Corbuzier and Echa Haura's podcast. This research was conducted because the author found many violations of the maxim of appreciation. The method used in this research is the literature study method. In the library study method, the research carried out is by collecting data and analyzing relevant data. Based on the discussion, there are 4 deviations from the rules in the Deddy Corbuzier and Echa Haura podcast.

This research looks at the part of politeness strategies in cross-cultural communication, concentrating on Asian, European, and African cultures. A qualitative approach was used, and data were gathered through intercultural dialogues and interviews with 30 participants. The results show important cultural differences in using positive and negative politeness strategies. Asian cultures focused on indirectness, honorifics, and non-verbal cues to preserve harmony and hierarchical respect, while European cultures combined directness with mitigation methods like humor and politeness markers. African cultures used inclusive language, storytelling, and indirectness to build group cohesion. This study emphasizes the significance of intercultural competence for handling cultural differences and enhancing communication in various environments.   

Pragmatics, a fundamental branch of linguistics, focuses on the implicit rules that govern human interaction. It delves into how meaning is constructed, conveyed, and interpreted in everyday communication beyond literal language. This study explores the mechanisms of pragmatics in daily life, particularly how context, shared knowledge, and social conventions influence interactions. Key areas examined include speech acts, implicature, and politeness strategies, which highlight the dynamic nature of meaning-making in various social contexts. Speech acts, such as requests, apologies, and promises, illustrate how utterances perform actions beyond their lexical content. Implicature examines how individuals infer meaning that is not explicitly stated, relying on context and shared assumptions. Politeness strategies, which vary across cultures, play a crucial role in managing interpersonal relationships and ensuring smooth communication by balancing social expectations and individual intentions. Understanding these unspoken rules is essential for effective communication, as they often dictate the success of social interactions. Misinterpretations in pragmatics can lead to misunderstandings, social faux pas, or conflicts, emphasizing the importance of cultural and contextual awareness. Pragmatic competence is crucial in multilingual and multicultural settings, where differing conventions and norms can create unique challenges. By synthesizing theoretical insights from existing literature, this study highlights the pervasive influence of pragmatics in shaping human interaction. It underscores the necessity of pragmatic awareness in fostering interpersonal understanding, enhancing communication skills, and navigating the complexities of social life effectively.  

This article explores the use of directive speech acts in dialogues presented in English textbooks. Drawing on the theoretical framework of speech act theory by Parker and Riley (1994), the study focuses on understanding how directives—utterances that seek to influence the behavior of the listener—are presented in various dialogues. It examines the various forms and functions of directives, their role in communication, and how they help learners of English understand and practice practical conversational strategies. The article highlights the importance of directive speech acts in both formal and informal contexts, with specific examples drawn from English language textbooks. This study uses qualitative descriptive research where data is found in dialogues in textbooks and then matched with theory and poured into a sentence. This study found that there are five types of directive speech acts, namely, orders, warnings, giving advice, suggestions, and recommendations. In this study, 7 command data, 3 warning data, 2 advice data, 8 suggestion data, and 1 recommendation data were found. In this study, two techniques were found in the delivery of speech acts, namely direct and non-direct. Non-direct techniques tend to contain an element of politeness rather than direct. In addition, the speech actions in this textbook can help students understand, and using directive speech acts effectively can significantly improve communicative competence in language learners.

Teachers hold a crucial responsibility in every stage of students' development, including intellectual and spiritual growth. This role is vital in fostering students' emotional maturity, enabling them to adapt to changes and advancements in their environment. This study aims to explore the efforts of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers in addressing behavioral deviations among students at SMP Negeri 03 Padang Panjang. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method by gathering information through interviews, observations, personal documents, notes, and other relevant materials. The identified forms of student behavioral deviations at SMP Negeri 03 Padang Panjang include smoking, bullying, lack of attention and concern toward teachers during lessons, failure to complete assignments, disrespectful behavior and lack of politeness, absence from congregational prayers, bringing mobile phones to school without permission, skipping classes, and using inappropriate language.

This article presents a systematic review of pragmatic competence in second language acquisition (SLA), emphasizing its critical role in effective communication and intercultural understanding. Pragmatic competence encompasses the ability to understand and use language appropriately in diverse social and cultural contexts, including mastering speech acts, politeness strategies, conversational implicatures, and intercultural pragmatics. Despite its importance, pragmatic competence often receives less attention in language instruction compared to grammar and vocabulary. The review highlights the effectiveness of explicit and implicit teaching methods, authentic interaction, and cultural immersion in developing pragmatic skills. It also underscores the role of technology, such as digital platforms and simulations, in enhancing learners’ ability to navigate real-life communication scenarios. The findings reveal significant challenges, including cultural variability in pragmatic norms, difficulties in standardizing assessments, and the influence of learners’ individual differences. The study calls for innovative teaching and evaluation methods, focusing on personalized approaches and the integration of pragmatic learning with emotional intelligence. By synthesizing current research and practices, this article provides valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and researchers, advocating for adaptive, culturally informed, and technology-supported strategies to enhance pragmatic competence in SLA.
