The purpose of this research is to determine the motives of Indonesian exchange participants in carrying out cross-cultural communication during their student exchange period in South Korea, their cross-cultural communication experiences during student exchange period in South Korea, as well as the meaning of cross-cultural communication received from their communication experiences in South Korea. The results of this research show that the motives of Indonesian student exchange participants in carrying out student exchange in South Korea are divided into two, namely because-of-motive which came from stereotypes about South Korea and in-order-to-motive which came from their interest in South Korean culture, education, desire to expand friendships, and deepening or gaining Korean language skills. Then, it was revealed that Indonesian students experienced culture shock in several stages; initial euphoria, irritation and hostility, gradual adjustment, and acceptance and integration, with language being the most common cross-cultural communication barrier that causes negative communication experiences in both academic and non-academic environments. In interpreting their communication experiences, Indonesian exchange students show that they find differences and similarities in communication styles between South Korea and Indonesia. Through understanding the differences and similarities in communication styles, they can find solutions to overcome communication barriers that occur, namely through building friendships and deepening language skills. The impacts that arise on students include becoming more open-minded individuals, respecting other people's privacy and the emergence of new good habits in each informant.

Abstract. One of the legacies of the ancestors in the Toba Batak culture is the Manulangi ritual. One of the Manulangi rituals in Toba Batak society is currently known as Sulang-sulang Hariapan. Hariapan toasts in Batak society are known as a way of honoring elderly parents. Respecting parents is an implementation of the fifth law of the Torah contained in Exodus 20:12: "Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you." In Christian teaching, we teach respecting parents, not speaking harshly, not insulting parents, especially when they are sick, but parents must be given encouragement so that even when they are sick, they remain calm and wait for death to come. Every child who respects his parents will receive blessings. The author uses a qualitative approach. The Qualitative Approach emphasizes the search for meaning, understanding, concepts and descriptions of a phenomenon; prioritizes quality, and is presented narratively. Research data was collected through interviews. The author conducted open interviews so as not to limit the informants from conveying their understanding of Sulang-sulang Hariapan. This research was conducted in Sungai Raya Village, Siempat Nempu Hulu District, Dairi Regency. The results of research conducted by the author on traditional figures, religious leaders and ordinary people in Sungai Raya Village in performing the Hariapan Toasts are the result of interpreting the meaning of the Fifth Commandment, even the Hariapan Toasts are the result of a theological study of the Fifth Commandment.

The examination of cultural content in textbooks enables educators to identify suitable course materials that effectively cater to the linguistic requirements of learners in a culturally appropriate manner. This study aimed to examine the cultural aspects of the target language in high school English textbooks, specifically "Bahasa Inggris 2017 revised edition Kelas X" and "English in Mind Second Edition (Student's Book 3) for Grade X." The research used Cortazzi and Jin's checklist of cultural types and Byram's criteria of Cultural Knowledge, Cultural Awareness, and Intercultural Competence. The data was gathered from two English textbooks for tenth-grade students written by native and non-native English speakers. The findings showed that Textbook 2, English in Mind for Grade X, had a higher cultural content compared to Textbook 1, Bahasa Inggris Kelas X. Textbook 2 presented more target culture-related content, covering 188 items, International culture 64 items, and the least presented type, Source culture 28 items. Both textbooks met the cultural aspects criteria as suggested by Byram's criteria but Textbook 2 contained more target culture-related content than Textbook 1. In conclusion, the ideal textbook for presenting more target cultural content is represented by Textbook 2, which is written by native speakers of English.
