Waste management remains a major challenge, particularly due to the lack of public awareness and habits in sorting waste from its source. Innovative technology-based solutions are needed to support more effective waste management systems. This study aims to design and develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart trash bin capable of automatically sorting metal and non-metal waste. The system utilizes an ESP32 microcontroller as the main controller, an LJ12A3-4-Z/BY sensor to detect metal materials, an E18 sensor to detect non-metal materials, and an ultrasonic sensor to monitor bin capacity. The waste separation mechanism is operated by a servo motor controlled by the system, while the Blynk application is integrated for real-time monitoring and full-capacity notifications sent directly to the user’s smartphone. The research stages included hardware design, microcontroller programming, IoT platform integration, and functionality testing to ensure system performance and reliability. The results showed that the smart trash bin operated as expected, successfully identifying and separating metal and non-metal waste automatically, while also sending real-time notifications to the user when the bin approached full capacity. The implementation of this technology has the potential to modernize waste management processes, improve the efficiency of waste sorting, and reduce dependency on manual labor. Furthermore, this research opens opportunities for future development by integrating additional sensors and cloud-based data management systems to support smart city initiatives and sustainable waste management practices.

In connection with the easing of the Covid 19 virus in Indonesia, the Indonesian Christian University (UKI) Engineering PKM TEAM conducted welding training offline for children with special needs. The purpose of the Service for children at the Panti Karya is to be able to provide training in welding and making trash cans easily and effectively as life skills for the children of the HEPHATA HKBP Panti Karya Foundation in North Sumatra Participants, to be able to implement cleanliness around the Hephata HKBP Panti Karya Foundation in North Sumatra as well as children who already have the skills to make trash cans from welding training can generate incoming funds for the HKBP Hephata Panti Foundation in North Sumatra. With this dedication, we can equip the children of the Karya Orphanage with life skills in making trash cans and welding to increase their competence.

Kegiatan PKM (Pengabdian kepada masyarakat) ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk memahami pentingnya memelihara lingkungan, yang kedua dengan melukis di tong sampah anak mampu mengekspresikan alam di tong sampah dan yang ketiga, bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kepedulian peserta didik terhadap lingkungannya. Dalam pelaksanaan PKM (Pengabdian kepada masyarakat) ini, metode yang digunakan yaitu penyuluhan, pendampingan dan praktek. Adapun tahapannya yaitu sebagai berikut, yang pertama tahap persiapan, tahap pelaksanaan dan yang terakhir tahap evaluasi. Hasil dari kegiatan PKM (Pengabdian kepada masyarakat menunjukkan bahwa anak mampu memahami pentingnya memelihara lingkungan, mampu meningkatkan kreativitas anak dan mampu meningkatkap kepedulian terhadap lingkungan sekolah.

Di dalam maupun di luar ruangan tong sampah sangatlah di butuhkan untuk orang banyak untuk kebersihan lingkungannya. Dengan adanya tong sampah bisa terjaganya lingkungan yang asri dan udara semakin sejuk tanpa adanya sampah- sampah yang berserakan di mana- mana. Pada penelitian ini tong sampah dalam pengaktifannya akan di buat secara otomatis agar lebih mudah penggunaannya yaitu dilengkapi dengan sensor adjustable infrared dan gerbang logika dan dikontrol menggunakan IC L293D dan diteruskan ke motor stepper . tong sampah akan bekerja secara otomatis sehingga mempermudah manusia untuk membuang sampah pada tempatnya, dan lebih efisien dalam penerapannya.dari hasil pengujian didapat sistem bekerja dengan baik sesuai dengan harapan yang diinginkan. Disini peran sensor adjustable infrared sangatlah penting yang dapat mempengaruhi tingkat keberhasilan sedcara menyeluruh.
