Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. Early detection and prompt first aid during the golden period are essential to improve patient outcomes, yet family knowledge regarding stroke management is often limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of health education media, specifically audio-visual and leaflet, on family knowledge of early detection and first aid for stroke patients in the working area of Tamamaung Public Health Center, Makassar. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pre-test post-test approach. A total of 64 respondents were selected using purposive sampling and divided into audio-visual and leaflet groups. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge in both groups after the intervention (p = 0.000), with a significant difference between groups (p = 0.016), where audio-visual media was more effective than leaflets. These findings indicate that both media improve family knowledge, but audio-visual media is more effective and can be recommended as a primary educational tool to improve family preparedness in stroke emergencies.

First aid in emergencies is an essential skill that must be possessed by nursing students as prospective health workers. Educational media in the form of practical guidebooks is believed to be able to improve students' knowledge and skills, but their effectiveness needs to be proven empirically. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the educational media of the Emergency First Aid Guide in improving the knowledge and skills of Basic Life Assistance (BHD) for nursing students. The research design used was pre-experimental with a one group pretest-posttest design approach. The research sample consisted of nursing students selected through purposive sampling techniques. The research instruments include a knowledge questionnaire and a BHD skill observation sheet. Data analysis was carried out by the normality test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant improvement in respondents' knowledge from an average of M: 12; SD ± 2.52 to M: 17; SD ± 1.55 (Z = -7.789; p = 0.00), as well as an improvement in BHD skills from M: 83; SD ± 9 to M: 99; SD ± 10.2 (Z = -7.789; p = 0.00). These findings show that educational media in the form of handbooks is effective in improving the ability of nursing students to deal with emergency situations. This media can be used as an alternative strategy in emergency nursing learning to support students' clinical readiness.

Choking is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among children, particularly those aged 3 years or younger. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2011, there were approximately 17,537 reported cases of choking, with the majority of these incidents occurring in children aged between 12 to 36 months. In 2013, about 34 children per day were taken to emergency departments due to choking (Pendigrot et al., 2019). Furthermore, in Indonesia, it was reported that around 10% of the 430 infant deaths were caused by choking during breastfeeding (Suartini & Kusniawati, 2020). Given this, the need for effective first aid knowledge, especially among mothers of young children, becomes imperative. This community service activity aimed to empower 27 mothers with toddlers in the village of Bangun Rejo, Tanjung Morawa, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on the essential skills for performing first aid in cases of choking. The program was structured in three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. During the implementation, the participants received theoretical lectures, live demonstrations, and informational leaflets on how to perform first aid for choking. Following the training, an evaluation was conducted to assess the mothers' proficiency in performing the procedure. The results showed a promising outcome, with 19 mothers (70.3%) becoming proficient in first aid for choking, while 8 mothers (29.7%) still lacked the necessary skills despite the training. This outcome highlights the importance of continuous education and practice for parents, especially mothers, to ensure that they can act quickly and effectively in emergency situations. This activity is expected to equip mothers with the skills needed to perform first aid for choking as an immediate response before seeking medical assistance, ultimately helping to reduce the risks associated with choking incidents.

Choking is a condition where the upper airways are blocked by food or other objects which causes breathing problems. This is a medical emergency that can occur suddenly, and requires immediate action by anyone who is near the victim, because if left too long the body can experience a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) and resulting in death. Choking is a respiratory condition that is often underestimated by society. In children, the cause of choking is not chewing food properly and eating too much at one time. Apart from that, children also often put small solid objects into their mouths.Treatment is usually successful and the survival rate can reach 95%. Early treatment for choking is divided into 3 types, namely back blow (patting on the back), abdominal thrust (stomping on the stomach) also known as the Heimich maneuver and chest thrust (stomping on the chest).
