This research explores the use of deixis in the film Orion and the Dark. It aims to identify the types of deixis employed in the film and determine which category appears most frequently. The study is based on Levinson’s framework, which classifies deixis into five categories: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. A descriptive qualitative method was used in conducting this study. The data were collected by watching the film, closely examining the dialogues, identifying expressions containing deixis, grouping them according to Levinson’s theory, and interpreting the data descriptively. The results show that all five types of deixis occur in the film. Among them, person deixis is the most dominant with 2,347 occurrences. It is followed by time deixis with 373 occurrences, place deixis with 294 occurrences, discourse deixis with 289 occurrences, and social deixis with 182 occurrences. The high frequency of person deixis reflects the strong emphasis on interaction between characters, where speakers frequently refer to themselves and others during communication. Meanwhile, the other types of deixis appear less frequently and mainly serve to support the context of the dialogue, such as indicating time, location, discourse relations, and social interactions. In conclusion, deixis plays an essential role in shaping meaning and helping viewers interpret context, participants, and situational references within the film.

This study aims to analyze the types and functions of deictic expressions found in the English chorus of the song “Bright as the Sun”, the official song of the 2018 Asian Games. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method to examine how meaning is constructed through the use of deictic expressions in the lyrics. The analysis focuses on identifying, classifying, and interpreting deictic elements by considering both their lexical meaning and their contextual use. The data were taken from the English chorus and analyzed through several steps, including close reading, identification of relevant expressions, and classification into types of deixis. The findings show that the lyrics contain five types of deixis: person, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social deixis, although they appear with varying frequency and function. Person deixis is the most dominant type, mainly through the use of pronouns such as you, your, and we. These expressions function to directly address the listeners and create a sense of personal involvement. Spatial deixis is reflected in expressions that refer to a broader or global context, while temporal meaning is conveyed implicitly through phrases that suggest urgency and present action. Discourse and social deixis are also present, although they appear less explicitly in the lyrics. Overall, the findings indicate that deictic expressions play an important role in shaping meaning and strengthening the motivational message of the song. The use of deixis helps create a closer connection between the lyrics and the listeners, reinforcing themes of unity, encouragement, and collective identity.

This research explores the use of person deixis in the Balinese language, with a particular focus on the honorific system as a form of social interaction. Person deixis not only reflects the relationship between the speaker and the interlocutor but also serves as a key mechanism for expressing social status, age, and emotional closeness. This research addresses the question: Does the choice of deictic forms involve specific cognitive processes, such as the assessment of social status, politeness, and situational context?  Beside that, this research also discuss what factors most influence the choice of personal pronouns used in dialogue? Employing a descriptive-qualitative approach and analyzing data from Balinese narrative texts, this article examines how the selection of deictic expressions engages complex cognitive mechanisms. The findings reveal that the use of honorifics is not merely a linguistic practice but also influences speakers’ patterns of thought in interpreting and evaluating social relationships. These results support the notion that language and thought are closely interconnected, and that the structure of the Balinese language cultivates a high degree of social sensitivity in its speakers from an early age.

Deixis is a pragmatic study that examines the relationship between language structure and the context of the situation in which it is used. The phenomenon of deixis can be found in everyday conversation in the form of verbal language as well as in literary works such as films or novels. In literary texts, deixis can pose an obstacle to understanding the text. The research entitled "Analysis of Deixis in the Short Stories 'Rembulan di Mata Ibu' and 'A Piece of Love in Silence' by Asma Nadia" aims to analyze the use of deixis in two short stories by Asma Nadia: "Rembulan di Mata Ibu" and "A Piece of Love in Silence." The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection technique involved carefully reading and noting elements in the short stories. The data used consists of text fragments thought to contain deictic elements, including personal deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Based on the results of data collection, 55 instances of personal deixis, 17 instances of time deixis, 11 instances of place deixis, 50 instances of discourse deixis, and 4 instances of social deixis were found. Thus, the total number of deictic instances is 137. It is hoped that this research will contribute significantly to the understanding of the use of deixis in literary works and help the public better comprehend the meanings and messages contained in such works.
