The increasing number of elderly people in Yogyakarta City demands the provision of an inclusive environment that supports the welfare of the elderly. This study aims to assess the suitability of Yogyakarta City for the concept of an elderly-friendly city based on seven main variables: green open space, public transportation, pedestrian facilities, health services, social support, elderly-friendly intergenerational interactions, and advocacy for the basic rights of the elderly. The research used a quantitative approach with observation and questionnaire methods to elderly people in all sub-districts in Yogyakarta City. The data were analyzed using a Guttman scale to determine the level of suitability of each variable. The results showed that overall Yogyakarta City is classified as “suitable” for the concept of an elderly-friendly city, with a total score of 5.32 out of a maximum scale of 6.80. Four variables meet the suitability criteria, namely public transportation, health services, social support, and intergenerational interaction. Meanwhile, the other three variables are still not fully suitable and require improvement. This study recommends improvements in these three aspects so that the implementation of the concept of an elderly-friendly city in Yogyakarta City can be more optimal and sustainable.

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of social service management in handling neglected elderly in Medan City. The phenomenon of neglected elderly has become a complex social problem along with the increasing number of elderly population and changes in family structure in urban areas. Medan City as the third largest metropolitan city in Indonesia faces challenges in providing optimal social services for neglected elderly. This study uses a qualitative research method with a library research approach. Data collection was carried out through a literature review of various relevant library sources, including scientific journals, books, research reports, policy documents, and official publications of related agencies. Data analysis used content analysis techniques to identify patterns and themes related to the effectiveness of social service management for neglected elderly. The results of the study indicate that social service management in Medan City has not been fully effective in handling neglected elderly. In terms of planning, there are still limitations in mapping and recording neglected elderly data. In terms of organization, coordination between agencies is still weak. Program implementation faces constraints of budget and human resource limitations. The monitoring and evaluation system has not been running optimally. Supporting factors include local government commitment, availability of regulations, and community participation. While inhibiting factors include budget constraints, lack of professional staff, and minimal cross-sector coordination. This study recommends the need to strengthen the social service management system through increasing human resource capacity, optimizing the budget, and strengthening cross-sector coordination to improve the effectiveness of handling the elderly in Medan City.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that cardiovascular disease and hypertension rank as the second most prevalent health conditions among the elderly, following arthritis. These conditions affect 15.2% of a surveyed population of 1,203 individuals. In response to this, the present study seeks to enhance the knowledge of Fertile Age Couples (PUS) and older adults about hypertension prevention and management. The method employed involves in-person counseling supported by educational tools such as booklets and leaflets. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed through pre-tests and post-tests, each comprising 10 questions. Findings revealed that, prior to counseling, 11 out of 30 participants (36.7%), selected through total sampling, demonstrated good knowledge. Following the intervention, this figure rose to 26 individuals (86.7%), reflecting an 18.28% increase. Moreover, the p-value recorded was <0.000, signifying a statistically significant impact of the educational intervention on improving hypertension awareness among PUS and the elderly. Overall, the study confirms the success of the intervention in raising awareness and understanding of hypertension, which may help lower its occurrence within the targeted population.

Hypertension is a disease that does not show symptoms or complaints. However, if detected at an advanced stage of the disease, it can result in disability or death. Hypertension is increasing, especially in the elderly group, known as the Silent Killer disease (Ministry of Health, 2019). In Indonesia and in several countries in the world, hypertension has become a major health problem, where the increase in hypertension cases is estimated to increase by around 80%, especially in developing countries in 2025 from 639 million cases in 2000, and is estimated to increase to 1.5 billion cases in 2025 (Hakim L., 2019). Increasing public awareness can be done through promotive and preventive efforts by conducting early detection of routine blood pressure measurements and compliance in taking medication routinely (Astutiatmaja, 2022). The purpose of this community service activity is to increase the knowledge of the elderly about controlling and treating hypertension to prevent the risk of complications of other degenerative diseases due to hypertension and as an evaluation to increase the knowledge of the elderly to maintain health in old age so that complications of the disease can be prevented in improving the quality of life of the elderly

Elderly individuals living in nursing homes often face psychological challenges such as loneliness, loss of social roles, and limited interaction with family members. This qualitative study aims to explore how nursing home staff perceive the psychological well-being of the elderly based on Ryff’s six dimensions: self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. A qualitative approach was employed using in-depth interviews with two permanent staff members at Panti Werdha Harapan Ibu, Semarang, who were purposively selected based on their involvement in elderly care. Data were collected through open-ended interviews guided by Ryff’s scale indicators and analyzed thematically. The results indicate that the elderly are able to accept their condition, build warm social relationships, maintain a level of independence in daily activities, and successfully adapt to the nursing home environment. They also show enthusiasm in participating in various activities and a willingness to continue personal development. These findings suggest that the psychological well-being of the elderly in nursing homes is largely influenced by social support from staff and fellow residents, as well as structured activities that foster a sense of purpose and meaning in life. The implications of this study highlight the vital role of nursing home staff as key agents in maintaining and enhancing the psychological well-being of the elderly through a personal, warm, and humanistic approach.

Old age is a challenging phase of life, characterized by physical, social and psychological changes that often affect the emotional well-being of the elderly. Loneliness, loss of meaning in life, and prolonged stress are often experienced, especially by those living in nursing homes. One effective approach to overcome this is reminiscence therapy, which is an activity of remembering and retelling past experiences. This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore how memories of youth can be a source of emotional strength for the elderly. In-depth interviews were conducted with several elderly people in nursing homes. The results revealed that reminiscing about the past had a positive impact on their psychological state. Three main themes were found: (1) memories of youth foster happiness and nostalgia, (2) life achievements foster a sense of pride and self-identity, and (3) life value is gained through social relationships, spirituality, and acceptance. This process strengthens the emotional resilience of the elderly and improves quality of life. Thus, reminiscing about the past is not just nostalgia, but an important psychosocial intervention. Reminiscence therapy is recommended to be implemented routinely as part of efforts to improve the mental well-being of older adults in nursing homes.

The elderly stage is characterized by complex physical, psychological, and social changes, often leading to a decline in bodily functions and limitations in daily activities. This condition frequently results in older adults becoming highly dependent on assistance from others, including family members and caregivers in nursing homes. This study aims to understand the changes in bodily functions experienced by older adults and to identify factors that accelerate or worsen these processes, particularly among those residing in nursing homes. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, involving three older adult participants and one caregiver at Harapan Ibu Nursing Home. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed descriptively to illustrate patterns of functional decline and influencing factors. The main findings indicate that older adults experience decreased mobility, muscle strength, motor function, as well as impairments in vision and hearing. However, those who remain active in daily activities and receive environmental support demonstrate better levels of independence and quality of life. The study concludes that the decline in bodily functions among older adults is a natural process that can be slowed through physical activity, social support, and a supportive environment, enabling them to maintain a meaningful and independent life despite limitations.

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) examination in improving balance and preventing the risk of falls in the elderly. The elderly are an age group that is vulnerable to decreased body function, one of which is balance disorders that can increase the risk of falls. Falls in the elderly can have serious impacts such as injury, decreased quality of life, and even death. Balance examination and evaluation are very important to prevent the risk of falls. One of the effective and widely used measuring tools is the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), which assesses balance ability through 14 functional activity items. This study aims to evaluate the role of BBS in detecting balance disorders and as a basis for physiotherapy interventions to improve postural stability in the elderly. The results of the study indicate that periodic use of BBS can help identify elderly people with high risk of falls and monitor balance progress after intervention. Thus, BBS is an important tool in fall prevention strategies and improving the quality of life of the elderly. Conclusion: the use of the Berg Balance Scale is not only effective in assessing balance status, but also as a tool for monitoring the results of physiotherapy interventions in the elderly. Periodic use of BBS is recommended as part of a fall prevention program in health care facilities or elderly communities.

The increasing number of elderly people living in nursing homes is an important concern, given that their psychosocial and spiritual needs are often not optimally met. This study aims to analyze the life satisfaction of elderly people living in Omega Nursing Home in Semarang City. The main reason for this research is to understand in depth how the elderly make meaning of their lives and the satisfaction of life that has passed before, in situations that are often far from family and meaningful activities. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, and involved 5 elderly participants selected through purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, then analyzed descriptively through the process of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the level of life satisfaction of the elderly varied greatly and was influenced by past experiences, acceptance of current conditions, expectations for the future, and the views of others. Some seniors showed resignation, regret and loneliness, while others felt comfortable, grateful and retained a zest for life. The main findings suggest that social relationships, spirituality, and communication with family are key determinants in shaping older adults' life satisfaction. This study emphasizes the important role of the nursing home in facilitating activities that build the social and spiritual relationships of the elderly, as well as the need to improve communication between the elderly and their families. The study suggests that elderly services should not only focus on physical needs, but also on psychosocial dimensions and self-actualization, to support the overall well-being of the elderly.
