Penafsiran Kontemporer Tentang Filantropi

            All religions teach to do good, help each other, respect and appreciate one another.  Doing good can be in the form of material, time, energy, or donating thoughts.  People who do good are also referred to as philanthropists.  One of the goals of philanthropists in helping others is to prosper and ease the burden on their brothers and sisters in need. Philanthropic values ​​have been rooted in Islamic teachings since the beginning of their spread, this is marked by the fourth pillar of Islam, namely the obligation to pay zakat for all adherents.  In its development, philanthropy in Islam is realized through ZISWAF, zakat, infaq, shodaqah and waqf.  There are many verses in the Qur'an that command people to help each other, share and do good, even those who do it will be rewarded with kindness that is similar or even better than it.  This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with the approach of the Maudhu'i interpretation method, in which the discussion is in the form of verses about philanthropic characters.  So based on the method used, the following conclusions emerge: First, there are two motives behind philanthropic activists, namely religious motives and social reality motives which are mostly influenced by environmental factors.  Second, there are at least five characters possessed by philanthropists, namely altruism, a sense of qana'ah, generosity, social justice and obedience to religious teachings.
