Improving Maternal and Neonatal Health Through Effective Health System Interventions

Maternal and neonatal health remains a critical global challenge, with significant disparities in health outcomes between high-income and low- and middle-income countries. Effective health system interventions are key to improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. A comprehensive, accessible, and quality healthcare system can ensure timely, safe, and effective care for pregnant women and newborns, thus reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. This article reviews the role of health system strengthening in improving maternal and neonatal health. It focuses on workforce training, accessibility of maternal and neonatal care services, policy interventions, and the integration of evidence-based practices into healthcare delivery systems. The article further examines successful models of maternal and neonatal health interventions, with a focus on community-based and facility-based strategies. By highlighting key challenges and proposing solutions, this paper provides a roadmap for enhancing health systems to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns worldwide.
